I understand that only Imperial is sanctioned and thus takes priority.
Surely a concession to metric (legal?) nonsense today means mass convention for us all tomorrow. Rather than simply confused, maybe it’s illegal?

As well as Orys getting confused with those signs, what about these that are at the Blackwall tunnel?
It is probably the first low bridge sign the foreign driver will come across and it plainly tells him that 4.0 metre equals 13 feet 4 inches.
The bridges must all be measured, resigned and checked after roadworks or repairs.
The Blackwall tunnel is a good one, 13ft 4in gives 4m064. One of our French drivers went southbound through it by mistake & turned round at the first exit to go back north. Our trucks are about 4m10 & he was sent off to the left & stopped by the Police. The Policeman couldn’t speak French & refused to speak to me on the 'phone. I listened to him telling our driver that by law his French registered truck should have its height in feet & inches in the cab & that because he had thought that the height would be the same in both directions there would be no further action. Two weeks later he received notification that he must go to court for his offences. Big brother is alive & well but the truth can always be bent by ones in uniform.
Is there any comparison to this and drivers hitting bridges?.

Interesting, because in my regular truck (a Rigid),
Has displayed in the cab both Metric [Metres] & Imperial (Feet & Inches) hight notifcations
And gess what,
She’s 2 inches under sign one (13ft 4")
And 0.02 metre’s ABOVE sign two (4.0m)
!! Ho !! what fun…

Be careful fellow trucking dudes (especially those of you who regulary transit this tunnel)
Because what the tunnel authority have done here is reduce the clearence hight for Metric (hight) plated trucks
Presently this does NOT effect UK registered trucks
How-ever when Metric is formaly adapted as the UK Standard, IT WILL.
Ps: no prize for gessing the “notified hight” of 2Q’s Wagon
This is what we electrical engineers call a “quantisation error”.
In the UK, height clearance signs are (nearly) always given in 3" increments. i.e. 10’0", 10’3", 10’6", 10’9", 11’0", …
Also, when they’re shown, metric clearances are usually given in 0.1m increments. i.e. 4.1m, 4.2m, 4.3m, … An exception to this is the Blackwall tunnel which I’ve seen signposted as 4.05m.
They’ll always round the clearance number down to the nearest increment.
So, consider a bridge which has an actual clearance of 4.25m (13’ 11.32")
Consider another bridge which has an actual clearance of 4.29m (14’ 0.89")
Of course, they could choose standard metric equivalents of each imperial step, but that would mean that some of them would have to be overly conservative, signing the bridge at a lower height than absolutely necessary, and causing trucks to divert unnecessarily.
