How many charts do you carry?

Ok then so is vosa going to accept the data stored in a transport office downloaded from the tacho head? After all you could possibly argue that the data is original and secure in the tacho head and on our cards, but it will be easy to alter data once it is stored on an ordinary pc.

Apparently so, that is what they are saying.

No idea how easy it would be as I haven’t seen the software that will download the data from the cards or the heads, but as it is legal data I guess that has been taken into consideration by the powers that be. Also the data must be kept for a year and the digital tachos store a years worth of data, if someone alters the data on the PC in the office it could still be checked against the data in the head to see if it matches.

they were publishing this fact before the first ones were in the trucks. the software to change the information was available before the hardware was on the market and that was one of the reasons the industry officials wanted the whole thing chucked out :unamused:

what is the deal with a truck with BOTH types fitted? we have a hired FM12 with both analogue and digital fitted

Not sure it is going to be quite so easy to alter data on a pc. The data is encrypted using public and private key code systems. The data also has a digital signature attached to it which verifys the authenticity (or otherwise). I cannot begin to explain it but if you read the book ‘the code book’ by Simon Singh you’ll start to get the idea. Apparently the banking system uses the same level / type of security so I guess emptying the cashpoints will be the first priority, rather than changing tacho records.

Scanny, you sure the vehicle is fitted with both analogue and digital? The modular tachos have a digital display on the front and have some electronic storage, for fault codes, but they still use analogue waxed charts. The modulars will be either Siemens VDO 1324 or Stoneridge 2400 series.
If it’s proper digital then it will be either; Siemens VDO 1381, Stoneridge SE5000 or Actia L2000. Canot think of any (good) reason as to why a vehicle would be fitted with both

it is definately fitted with both. two slots and display etc. i dont know what make it is but i will have a look tomorrow. the paper one is the cd ejector type thing. the one that most people thought was a cd player when it first appeared in trucks

i think scanny with it being a hire unit it gives the company a choice of which sort of tacho to use. if your lot hire it and you havent got a digital tacho card you cant use it can you :open_mouth: .

we have got 8 units on the fleet now fitted with digital tachographs and im ment to have training next week.(will have forgot it all over xmas though).
