How long do VOSA keep the Truck.....?

Time to get some magnetic LED bike lights then. I’ve spent many nights in a normal Lay-by without lights on

jessicas dad:
i wouldnt have thought there was much of an investigation unless the driver wasnt displaying any lights, then that would make the whole situation a whole lot more trickier.

Nothing to do with this but I cannot understand why the ■■■■ people sit in laybys with there lights on wether on break or gettign ready to park up etc etc… To me thats more a hazard than someone sitting with no lights on as to me its a poss that there ready for moving.

If I’m ready for moving then I have the headlights on and I’m indicating

But yes I see what you’re saying but most drivers wouldn’t consider a truck with parking lights on to be about to move out.

If they want us to sit with parking lights on then manufacturers should fit them. My old Merc 123 E series car had them, you turned the light switch past the off position… once for RHS, twice for LHS… and because they was low ampage lights they didnt kill the battery off either.

Had a spell years ago round Sittingbourn when the old bill were doing you without lights so it was on with the bike lights at night

I remember seeing a guy parked up once with some bicycle lights on the back lit up at night im sure he used them to save his truck battery being used all night, good idea and costs very little especially if u get chargeable batteries.

He did have his lights on…

Since its a legal requirement i don’t see why the truck makers don’t design trucks like VW’s.

On VW’s you put the indicator on when parked and will put light up that rear and front light on that side you select, i believe it just a small amount of power it uses to dimly illuminate the light.

Same with my motorbike, when you put the steering lock on, can turn it one further and will illuninate the back light if your parked on the street. Again just a small amount of power.

well they want chasing up then and get the lorry back.

i got a £30 ticket about 12 years ago for only displaying 1 white to the front and 1 red to the rear. it has to be 2 white to front and 2 red to rear.

Had a slider snap on the A1 a few years ago got that back after 2 weeks also had a tractor and trailer impounded in the 90s after a motor bike hit it while it was doing 50 mph got that back after 10 days

VOSA do not impound vehicles following fatal RTC’s, Its the accident ivestigator from local Police or roads policing unit that would do so. Most Police forces have there own collision investigation units and have done so for a long time; VOSA do not get involved unless requested to aid a local force, that would normally be to do an analysis of Digital Recording Units for them.

VOSA may sometimes be called in for major incidents such as the coach at Alton Towers or Multiple vehicle accidents involving a loss of life, but the accident collision units of old have long since gone.

It is always normal practice for the Police to impound all vehicles involved in fatal accidents though, the main reason is to preserve evidence and to give the bereaved a reason for the drivers untimely end.

Hope this info helps and stops this turning into a VOSA bashing session, based on incorrect information.

cheers all.

Thanks very much for putting us right on this subject, I spoke to our fleet manager today who said he had made contact with the police involved and we may get the vehicle back this week.
I hope so all my gear is in my cab, sleeping bag, pillow, CB, maps ect.,
Thanks for the info once again… :exclamation:

was there much damage to the trailer? and did the lorry driver get the blokes insurance details before he snuffed it?
or better still, why didn’t he [zb] off before plod turned up?

Why did Volvo design the lights to go out completely when you turn the ignition off…instead of side lights…!!!
Bloody rubbish!!!

TBH, its a very good question, and one I will be asking the manufacturers, why do they not as standard fit over night low drain parking lights-
Good topic

as long as the vehicle is facing the right way, why should it need to be illuminated at the front?
but i think the law should be changed, why not show green lights to the rear? that way everyone will know it’s parked, and not just waiting to pull out.

some small led’s would do the job, seen them on road plant left in layby’s

The one good thing about Dennis buses - switch the ignition off with the lights on and it goes to sidelights!!!
And the Volvo buses (though not sure about the newer ones) have a facility where the ignition is off you turn the switch the other direction and its sidelights, quite why this would be as there is the normal sidelights as well…
