Farthest I’ve done is rugby , apx 50 miles , I’ve had mates who did Lincoln - Sherburn , Sheffield - Stoke , one lad was doing Dagenham - rugby as he didn’t want London work every day out of Dagenham
I’m just wondering what drivers do & is there company limits on travelling
I did 90 minutes at one pint - Portland in Dorset to Southampton. There was work closer to home, but the wage differential made it worth the hike.
I also did Middlesbrough to Hull for a while, when I first moved up here - my Southampton firm let me transfer to their main yard, bringing the wagon and all my belongings with me. They simply changed the O-licence disk when I got there and carried on as normal. Those were the days, when firms did stuff like that, eh?
When doing continental stuff used to have a guy travel up from Exeter (4hrs) before starting work and shipping out on a 12hr or so shift. Nothing legally against it. Morally though…
Furthest I’ve ever worked (as in been based) from my front door is 5.8 miles
When driving Band Bus’s in the 90s I was living in Chester Le Street and working for a London based company, and as if that wasn’t a silly enough commute, I then moved to a company operating out of Plymouth.

Irrelevant really when your away for weeks at a time
Not trucks, but the female pilot on the Virgin advert lives in Dublin and flies out of Heathrow
For several years I did 2hrs there on Mon and the same back on Fri. Was usually finished early on Fri, and the company paid travel expenses.
I did forget I would finish night shift at rolls Royce patchway Bristol then travel up to see mrs for W/end in Grantham , then go back down mon afternoon for Monday night shift , long way in winter on a motorbike ,
Not tramping but still commuting from work/ back
The trick is to get an out based job where you can keep the truck at home…
Are you friends with anybody with a yard?
I live in the North, but Ive done this with, and worked for, firms from Essex, Holland,.and Belgium in the past,.and I parked in the farmyard across the road, the guy also ran a couple of trucks himself,.so he was cool with it.
Ok, It’s all.a while ago now,.but afaik you are still ok with foreign firms to park away from operating centres regularly at weekends, not sure about UK ones now though, rules have maybe changed.
Way to get around that would be to try firms that do routine and regular drops to a firm in your area., load up at the firms customer at end of week, run up home, park up at weekend, and tip Monday…just another option for you to think about anyway doze.
Also the bonus of not needing a car for work, so cash in your second car as I did.
If I wasn’t ok at present with my job I can think of at least 3 firms all from different areas in UK,.and one Dutch outfit, who are always up here every week,.I see them all the time, who I would be phoning if I was looking for work.

im
I assume it’s aimed at me rob , it was more interest in distance trampers travel than anything , I’m looking for days more than anything ,employed , but you’ve got to keep your options open , Peterborough / notts / Leicester arnt to far , 30 miles so if I had to tramp out of any of those it’s doable
No don’t know anyone who has a yard local

My flight attendant wife flies out of Heathrow but we live near Utrecht in The Netherlands. That’s nothing though. Some of her Heathrow based colleagues live in Singapore or Boston or Dubai. They commute in the night before, work their transatlantic trip(s) and then commute home again.
The airline industry is the home of long distance commutes !

Was the London firm Len Wright by any chance? Well, Watford really.
Not tramling but Before was hgv driver .
In the late 90s worked at Manchester airport.
Met a woman online who lived in Kirkby stepehen.
We dated lived together for a year or so I moved up there. And ever day was 75 mile trip to work same.back every day.
Looking at it now can’t believe I did it.
But at the time was in love was on better wages than I am now petrol was cheap and only took an hour more or less as was motorway all the way started at 6 am fisnhed at 2 . On a rota some times 4 days a week sometimes 5 .
35 miles each way, once a week. 45 minutes to an hour+, depending on time of day and day.
Lazy Sunday start time initially. In time to book in at Newcastle for the ferry to Ijmiuden.
A few years later we started a bit earlier, to catch the P&O from Hull to Europoort.
Newcastle ferry is 3.5 hrs, Hull is 6.5 hrs driving time
Returning home at all sorts of times on a Thursday usually, occasionally on Friday. Latest finishing time was 7pm.
I’m still at the same place 15 years later. Some weeks are a European trip, away all week as above.
Some weeks I’m on a UK week, commuting both ways at least twice a week, sometimes 5x a week.
It all changed when my wife was diagnosed with cancer. From full time European Driver, to UK Driver/spare EU Driver as and when needed.
Holiday cover, extra EU work, etc.
I was on a CPC course with a tramper that went from Kent to Lincolnshire. 150 miles each way. That is £50 a week on Diesel plus 4 hours of your time gone. A pound an hour off you wage a week.
Just don’t understand it. My place is 6 miles down the road. It isn’t the best nor the worst. It would take a huge increase with a V8 chucked in to do any big commute.
I was Crawley Sussex, based & was driving a car transporter for a company called Inchcape Automotive, based in Corby, Northants back in 2005.
I tramped all over the UK during the week, then they always got me a load to Gatwick Airport ( car rental firms) on a Friday afternoon, and after unloading, I’d park the truck on an industrial estate in (my friend’s business premises ) Crawley at the weekend, and go home, then my company would arrange another load from Gatwick Airport on Monday morning to start my week again.
Whenever I needed to move my own personal car to either Crawley ( Home ) or Corby ( Work ) they got me an 8 car load, and allowed me to load my car on the truck last, and take it with me. It worked quite well.

Perks of the job. When I was on recovery I could drive my car to any pub, get hammered and phone one of my colleagues to come and recover me and my car home. Perfect.
