How bad are roads in Hungary-Romania-Bulgaria

Im driving to sunny beach in Bulgaria in august from the uk in the car i read on loads of web sites about the poor roads in these country’s also that the police are corrupt i wanted who drive there how bad is it and should i be concerned

Hungary the roads are good, Romania and Bulgaria not so. Romania has some pot holes you need caving gear to negotiate :open_mouth:
I wouldn’t be put off driving out there in your car though. I have only had a Hungarian cop after coffee money once.

Can go via Serbia if your insurance company gives you green card if not its 120€ at the boarder.

Even if you have got green card the Serbs still like to charge you.

go via Serbia motorway nearly all the way to the Bulgarian boarder, sort your green card out before you go, Romania is a right ■■■ took me longer to go through there when we drove to Varna than crossing half of the other countries put together, just watch your speed out there they like foreign registered cars, you should get away with £10 to £20 donation if stopped.
you want to take the road south from Sofia to Plovdiv and then on to Burgas then from there straight to sunny beach.
E80 from Serbia to Sofia ring road than A1 from Sofia all the way to the outskirts of Burgas then take the E773 till you meet the junction for the E87, follow that to sunny beach!!! and have a nice holiday :sunglasses: :sunglasses: :sunglasses:

+1, spot on.
i like using serbia to get into bulgaria, if we are going there or turkey.
plenty of good places on the road through serbia for food and drink too
the police are keen in bulgaria, get an old wallet, and keep a lower amount of money in it just in case you get pulled. 3 of us were running together approaching the start of the ring road around sofia, they stopped the 1st truck, so we carried on to the next services and waited for him there.
the cops wanted 100 euros off him at 1st, he got it down to 15 without a receipt
some of the road surfaces are a bit rough, with some decent sized pot holes, but you’ll be fine. just be prepared for some rubbish driving and some entertaining overtakes from the locals

I’d go through romania myself, especially the northern route through transilvania - fantastic scenery, and very-very cheap. the roads are not that great but surely if you just wanted to get there, a plane would be a better option?

You said it want to see some places that we may not see by flying and 6 of us going so much cheaper to drive than to fly flights cost £250 each plus car hire so about 2k all in. driving tolls and taxes £100 fuel £600 hotels £150 ferrie £100 so half the cost of flying so makes good sence to drive

Transilvania

Don’t those two trees attached to the front of your trailer make you over height ?

Milodon is right! Im a local there. Also other users are right. Some cops need steak money. A 20 and you should be just fine

Watch out for the not so level crossings. Lucky I was following another truck or I might have come seriously unstuck.

6 of you going you could do it nonstop in 35-40 hours.

Hungry isn’t too bad if your going somewhere central, as for the other 2 good luck. Mind where u park, but u know that already!

Hello everyone !

I am a romainian van driver, so i can give you an update of the current road condition in Romainia.
So…You want to pass through Romainia. No problem !
Here it is :

  • Hungarian Roads are very good. You will drive only on highways. Keep in mind that you will need to buy Vigniete something like 10eur/ 1 week or so
  • Romainian roads …not so good. BUT!!! …there is a but…: you can enter Nadlac/Nagylac Boarder, and follow this stepps :
  1. Pass the boarder in the evening / this way you will travel by night and you will not get any traffic jac
  2. You will go on this route : Nadlac/Arad/ Deva/ Sebes/ Sibiu/ Rm. Valcea. From the last city you can take various roads, depending where you wanna get.
  3. Always have cash in your poket, but not large bills…something like 10/20 eur bills. This will help you to negociate a speed limit  Keep in mind that the police doesnt have the right to keep your driver licence and cant give you penalty points.
  4. Keep in mind that in Romainia as in Austria and Hungary, you need a Vigniete. In romainia … it`s something like 6 eur/ week.
  5. When you pass through small villages, if you get flashing lights from the oposite way, it meens that somewhere in that location is a police car
  6. It would be best to fallow a tautliner or truck, because they have radio stations and comunicate to each other where the police is, so basically if you see a tauliner running 70km/h in a small village, that means that there is no police.
  7. Never ever stop to give aid/help to foreigners that signal you that they need help/gas/anything else…90% are gypsies and will scam you by trying to sell you fake stuff or something like this.
  8. If you go to Bulgaria, i would advise you to go to Calafat, and from there go to Ruse ( boarder to bulgaria ). This way you will have a beautiful road along the Danube river !

And i almoust forgot…a hotel room si somewhere near 20euros/night/2 persons, and let`s not forget that you can, and you must use the highway where is possible.
Anyway…from Nadlac to Rm Valcea, you will make aprox. 6 hours ! And from there to Bulgaria another 5 !!

Cheers!

Always good to get local knowledge. Thankyou

I am glad that i can be helpfull. If anyone has questions about Romainia, please ask !

I drove to Sofia last year via Hungary and Romania … You will love it … There is a new motorway from Arad to Timisoara … Also if you drive to Carensebes you will need to pay a local toll to get over the bridge … And bolt everything down through Vratsa
