Hoveringham gravels

nigelhunt:
Just found a photo of a low loader, this is not the one that was based at hoveringham. The volvo based at hoveringham had a day cab.
Cant remember its reg but drove round the yard in it the day it arrived.Perhaps someone can tell me where this one came from, and
also what it appears to be carrying.

I have been to see my father today and if both our memories are correct i went with him one saturday morning in the early seventies to see this F88 at Dawsons of Leighton Buzzard [volvo agents] This vehicle was then new and hooked up to a new King tri axle low loader trailer, it was based at Wyboston quarry and the regular driver and mate was Lol Giddings and Jack Coney together they moved all manner of plant and machinery.

I dont know where the picture of the two maggie deutz was taken but four of them were based at Newbury and reading quarries. When new the drivers struggled to get the best out of them after driving trucks with Gardners in as the maggies needed lots of revs to get them going, not like the slow reving Gardners.

Hope you like this one

Brill mate, cant seem to find many pictures of the scammells.I wish now that i had taken more photos, when the yard was full .
Here;s an old DAF to be going on with.

Many thanks for that one bonkey.Photo was taken at hoveringham.used to look out of mobile plant window directly onto
the hopper in shot.

Changing wheels was never a problem, take a look at the old tyre van.

Does anybody know where this truck was based.

These must be some of the four wheelers robinswh told me about.Has any of you out their got any pictures of them.

Just been thinking of some of the quarries i frequented in the 70s.Do any of you remember these.

That’s a nice picture, taken in Newark by the looks of it,way before the by-pass was built.

More photos please.

Nigel, looking at the front hubs it looks like a Leyland

Heres a photo of one of the few fords opperated by hoveringham.

Hi Nigel, nice pic of the old coach which I think is ex-Barton Transport of Chilwell (the buses in the background look like Barton’s too), the reg no ‘MRR635’ would have been issued in 1951 and I think the coach would have been made in-house at Barton’s own workshops using running units cannibalised from older vehicles ( Leyland/s in this case). The body would also have been made in Barton’s workshops. Barton’s made many of their buses in this way and many were designated by make as ‘Barton’ even though they were made using the running parts from other manufacturers. This practice was a neccesity for many bus companies in the post war austerity years when the availablilty of new vehicles to the home market were in rare supply, although by 1951 things would have become much easier in this respect.
