Not sure about the wellies, but i think i saw him in the film hell drivers.
Hmmm know what you mean, one or two of them look a bit iffy, but they did in those day’s.

Moved this over from the SALES BROCHURES topic.
Guess this would have been at the ‘rough end’ of the business!

Looks like it would have been tough enough to stand it.

Look at the guy on the left in wellingtons was he a driver■■? When I drove for Ameys of Oxford in my young days ( many moons ago ) you were sacked on the spot if you were seen in the truck in wellies.
This has just reminded me of when I was on for Hartwells Oils in the bad winter of '62/3. There were a couple of Scammell Highwayman artics on contract to Shell at Thame, dark green, from the B’ham area, think the firm was Tubby or Tidy, something like that. Anyway one of the drivers was a big lad, 18/20 stone and he wore wellies all the time! Trouble was the Fuel oil didn’t do them much good and they used to squelch!! Lord knows what his feet must have been like at the end of the day, and he was in digs Monday to Friday!
Sorry for going off topic, but love to follow this thread as I remember them well on the roads in th '60s. thanks for all the pics & posts.
Many thanks for that picture,as mentioned earlier in this thread i worked on those dumper trucks. They were based at Finningley Quarry.
Wish i had a pound for every wheel nut that we changed, two trips down the field and back and they were loose.Hoveringham gravels
purchased the Belaz Dumper trucks from a company called UMO plant hire, they were based at doncaster and letchworth.
Here is a picture taken at finningley during the 1960s,as you can see we were all up to the neck in it.
And a nice picture of one of our old atkinson dumpers.
A new era, taken first Christmas after the takeover DAF CRC 103T in new T----c s----y colours. Lorry belonged to Steve Briggs who had it from new. The guy in the wellies I’m sure was called Alex, and was still wearing them when he went on RMC Readymix! Sorry if the colour scheme offends.
Regarding the mammoth sculpture, Nigel, here’s a pic of it now; as you’ll know of course (but for the benefit of the others) it now resides at the Clifton site of Trent Polytechnic, or whatever they call it now.
Dunno who the bloke is on the photo but it was the only one I could find.
Thanks for the picture of the mammoth kev, have a scout round and see what else you can find. The photos of the tarmac lorries
are also important to this thread,as they were the last lorries to be based at hoveringham before its demise.(THE END OF AN ERA).
What’s the current state of play on the Hoveringham site, Nigel? Have they dismantled the plant or is it just mothballed?
Sorry to say ,but its now all gone apart from the old mobile plant workshops, and what used to be scammell trailers.
Took these photos in may this year. The 360 is standing on the remains of the offices.
Every bit of the plant and workshops have now been demolished.
Thanks Nigel. Sad but inevitable I suppose.
I’m thankful the old man didn’t live to see it like that though. He must have done a few hours on those conveyors alone in the 43 years he worked there.
Just a couple for bonkey.
The last picture of the fleet of tarmac tippers in hoveringham yard before its demise.
That Foden Q52 BAL, was on E bay for sale earlier this year, I think it was near Church Stretton Its Blue red and a bit neglected now.
Dave the Renagade will know where its resting.
John.
Thanks for that john, but it was Q46 BAL that was for sale, the one shown earlier in this thread.I would be grateful if any one could
let me know if it did get sold or has it now been scrapped.
Thanks for the pics Nigel, super stuff !
Hi all
I’ve just been looking on a Google site(Berresfords motors Cheddleton). They run lorries at one time and there is a Albion photo in their gallery.
I’am certain its ex Hoveringham, Its a very short wheelbase 4 wheel tipper,A chap Colin Birch Machin drove it, The reg is 377 CTV.
I remember the cab was blasted with orange paint, but you could still see the Mammoth under the paint, The kids in the street stood there many hours
with sharp nails or somthing scratching the paint away to show the Mammoth again. This would be mid sixty’s not many televesions to watch then days.
John
Many thanks for the info john,im afraid i cant comment on this one as it was before my time.I do remember hoveringham running
a large fleet of albions in the 70s.The magjority of them were six wheelers with lad cabs,we knew them as albion 29ts.
I remember a company called WHATS OF NOTTS running some ex hoveringham lorries, but as regards to berresford i havent a clue.
I have been trying to find photos of albions but they seem to have vanished.
Just come across this photo of one of the avling barford dump trucks.Dont know who the driver is but the photo dates to the early sixtees.
