I know this is a bit general and vague but what would the rough price be for a back load from north Wales to Marchwood Military container port, in Southampton? The size is still to be decided but the weight would be approx 3 tonnes (Max hopefully). If it is a slate it will be about 2-4 pallets worth and if a Celtic cross it will be bigger but I can’t give you dimensions at the moment until they have decided on what would be a fitting memorial and it is commissioned.
The reason it is a bit vague is that a close friend of mine is involved with HMS Glamorgan as he served on her during the Falklands conflict in 1982. Below is a very brief outline of events that it relates to
On the 12 June at 06:37 she was hit by an Argentine Exocet missile and 13 members of her ships company sadly lost their lives with 14 others injured, at 19:35 that evening the 13 deceased members of the ships company were buried at sea due to the ongoing conflict.
HMS Glamorgan association is going to commission the memorial and have it transported to the Falklands using military means via ship but the problem is getting it from Wales (don’t know where yet) to Southampton and being a friendly bunch of truckers I thought I would ask if anybody would bring it down as a back load. It won’t be until towards the end of the year so obviously prices may/will change. They do have some money in the pot for transportation costs so even if you would do it for free or the cost of the fuel from Wales to Southampton it will save them some money and allow them to spend more on the actual memorial for their fallen ship mates. Or another possibility is the loan of a wagon so I can go up and collect it on their behalf with one of their members (my close friend)
If you would like more details about this please post or pm me and I will ask for you.

if they were flexible about timings etc (i.e give us a 2 week “window” to do it) then i’d gladly do it as a freebie, PM me when you have definite dates

JJ72,
i have a feeling they will be very flexible for you and will give you more than a 2 week window, aslong as the stone mason is on time im sure it will go well, thank you very much for that i will ring my mate and let him know. there will definitely be a few beers for you and maybe a photo opportunity (and some free advertising for you) at marchwood.
i will buy you a pint when i meet you.
many many thanks from everyone in the navy, not just fromn teh lads that were on the glamorgan.
I’m both surprised and disappointed that the Senior Service can’t/wont do this as a welfare gesture toward current serving members …ie, within Health, Safety & Welfare grounds.
I’m confident that a lowly shag in my old mob could arrange it to be done PDQ within extant supply runs.
Find out what the blanket-stacker’s attitude is about getting it shifted at public expense …a crate of ale should be the max rate… and any stacker taking that for a life-expired matey deserves a kicking.
Or maybe do it as a ‘self-help’ with a bid to MT and a few kindred herberts detailed to assist…?

Keith,
may i point out to you that i am actually a Blanket Stacker and have been for 19 years, the reason it is on here is that we are exploring various avenues and may not even need the assistance of the very kind offer from JJ72. personally i would like to use the JJ72 route as this will show that not all truckers are busy whizzing bottles of ■■■■ out thier windows or ■■■■■■■■ in laybys and MSA’s but it isnt my call, it will be down to the HMS Glamorgan Association that decide on that, it also shows that some of us hairy assed truckers do actualluy care about people and things around us.
as always with something as important as this you need a back up plan just in case. but then again it may work in the favour of JJ72 and his company as it will be free advertising (Navy News will more than likely run a piece and T&D may write an article, also you never know that one of the nationals may do a small piece about it.) and it shows that we (the trucking industry itself)can still be very kind even when the economy is on its arse and companies are struggling to survive but are willing to go out of thuier way for something like this and shows a support of the scarifice that people make for this country and its territories.
just as a pointer it doesnt work on ‘stacker to stacker’ anymore, it comes down to the civvy companies and UIN’s (i’m guessing you know what a UIN is) to charge it against. i know it shouldnt come to that but no doubt someones budget will have to pay for it and as all money in the forces (governments) pockets is decidedly lacking this year it will be even harder to get someone to approve it. if we were the RBS it wouldnt be a problem of getting billions out of them but as we are thier so called ‘servants’ we have no chance!
(for the sake of continued amusement)
Yes, you flippin have …twice - though I can understand the preference for you to ‘reply’ here since the TNUK PM system is hardly a gearbox of chuckles for this IT numpty… x
