HMS Glamorgan Request

People,

I know this is a bit general and vague but what would the rough price be for a back load from north Wales to Marchwood Military container port, in Southampton? The size is still to be decided but the weight would be approx 3 tonnes (Max hopefully). If it is a slate it will be about 2-4 pallets worth and if a Celtic cross it will be bigger but I can’t give you dimensions at the moment until they have decided on what would be a fitting memorial and it is commissioned.

The reason it is a bit vague is that a close friend of mine is involved with HMS Glamorgan as he served on her during the Falklands conflict in 1982. Below is a very brief outline of events that it relates to

On the 12 June at 06:37 she was hit by an Argentine Exocet missile and 13 members of her ships company sadly lost their lives with 14 others injured, at 19:35 that evening the 13 deceased members of the ships company were buried at sea due to the ongoing conflict.

HMS Glamorgan association is going to commission the memorial and have it transported to the Falklands using military means via ship but the problem is getting it from Wales (don’t know where yet) to Southampton and being a friendly bunch of truckers I thought I would ask if anybody would bring it down as a back load. It won’t be until towards the end of the year so obviously prices may/will change. They do have some money in the pot for transportation costs so even if you would do it for free or the cost of the fuel from Wales to Southampton it will save them some money and allow them to spend more on the actual memorial for their fallen ship mates. Or another possibility is the loan of a wagon so I can go up and collect it on their behalf with one of their members (my close friend)

If you would like more details about this please post or pm me and I will ask for you.

A great thread and i really hope someone can help them out, my uncle Alan “BRAD” Bradley served on the Glamorgan he is the manager of the football team pictured and one hell of a nice bloke as i,m sure they all are!! Regards the DUFFMAN

Good one Lee, I’m sure when you can come up with some detail;ie “where, when” there would be plenty of outfits willing to do it for free, as loads of container lorries are running back to Southampton every day from almost everywhere. Get onto some of the big container companies and you can’t go wrong, especially if they run out of Southampton.
Pentalvers, for example.
But untill you come up with some detail, your just peeing in the wind.

thanks for alll the help and encouragement fellas, as you may have noticed i also posted it on teh O/D page and JJ72 has kindly offered to do it for nowt.

much appreciated and i hope it turns out alright for them all. my mate has said that if he cant get the time off to go to the unveiling of it in the falklands he will jack his job in to be there. i dont think many bosses would refuse holidays to attend such a thing though.

as soon as i know anything for definite i will keep you al linformed.

many thanks guys and gals
