As an ex fitter from many moons ago (over 35 years) who has attended breakdowns on the hard shoulder including rebuilding rear hubs without wheels etc. which would take a few hours.
I would have personally have loved to have the 1st lane closed so I could work without having to try and jump out of way of wagons passing at 60 +mph (in those days) without all the superb brakes we now have on trucks.
Sometimes I do think why have they closed the lane when there is no one there, but as for the safety aspect of the job put yourself in the shoes of the tyre fitter / mechanic, would you like to sit with your back to oncoming traffic behind you doing 50 or 60 + mph trying to repair a vehicle in safety or would you rather you took your life in you hands just to save a few mindless idiots 10 or 15 minutes delay, I know which I prefer !
Lets face facts we all (me included) think why was that lane closed when there is no one there, so just a bit of common sense works wonders and YES close the lane when the recovery crew arrive but until then leave the road / lane closure until it is actually needed.

I love to educate poeple about who we are, what we do and why we do things. But when I pass a car or truck weaving around on the H/S and I get alongside and see they are on a phone, id love to be able to somehow get them a ticket. Lets be honest they deserve it. Big fine, points and a great big hike in insurance. And anyone who disagrees, lets see how you would react if your wife/kids/parents in a car get rammed by a guy on the phone and kills them. The rest of your life devastated because of this.
Also, a heck of a lot of our guys have left and HAVE joined the Police so that ends that one and anyone else who stays like myself, just enjoys helping people.

I know exactly what I look like driving around and I’m proud of the job I do. Bullied at school, I’ll let you make your mind up, I am 6 foot 2 now and was the biggest in my class , I played rugby then and now and go to the gym so no I wasnt bullied but thanks for the concern. I do want to help decent law abiding citizens that pay taxes, drive safely and have consideration for others. They seem to do a good job, I suppose it’s cheaper to have 2 HATO’s than one police officer. Here in Dorset we dont have any motorways so dont ever see them. Well said Chilistrucker.I must apologise for lowering my self to get into a slanging match.I post on here to answer queries about our role and i am very ready to agree to disagree with anyone.But,unfortunately,some people on here (we all know the type) can’t debate with a reasonable argument and have the opinion that we are a waste of time and money and nobody will change their attitude.No matter who it is disagreeing.It ahs been said many times by many different people that we have bad examples of traffic officers the same as any industry and truck driving is no different.
People can i ask would you like to see the police service take control of the highways traffic officers and turn them in to an american style highway patrol with enforcement powers?

From ex owner operator trucker fed up of sitting in endless congestion with no intention of being a wannabee .
There are plenty who will walk if more enforcement comes our way, but if you don’t want people on the phone and driving etc, do you want hato’s to be issuing FPN’S.
I’m more into education and explaining why it’s a daft idea to stop unnecessarily on the H/S while some dumb hairy ■■■ trucker watching battletar galactica/reading the paper/chatting on the phone/eating a pan of pasta etc, takes them out.
The public put themself and me at risk by stopping to swap drivers, answer an urgent phone call or have a sleep on a hatched bullnose by a junction etc.
So do you want well paid police doing routine jobs like that, or Hato’s being given more power’s but using discretion when an absolute offence has been commited like the police do ?

This is a valid point, come on gents, there are sections of both professions acting the protagonist, when this thread can be really useful to getting the proper picture. Do we really need a bitchfest!! A lot of my colleagues, myself included have previous police experience, so does that make us wannabes too? There are a lot of hard working HATOs who joined the HA to make a difference and do a bloody good job, so why slag the good ones off for the sake of one or two bad apples?

My police experience is Royal Military Police however one or two of our colleagues are ex traffic police so I’ll see what I can do
