Highways agency on the ball (not)

RANT… I went down the M6 last night, there was a car fire at J13 NB. we had matrix signs SB and NB to warn us, (good so far)… BUT… 4 and a half hours later on my way back north the matrix signs were still advising vehicle fire… AND we also had M6 closure at J8 and diversion via J1 of the M5… there was absolutely no prior warning of this, wouldn’t it have been nice to know about it beforehand so we could have chosen to divert via A50 across to the M1, or use the M6 toll… how many millions did all these matrix signs cost ■■?.. surely they could spare a couple of quid for an alarm clock to wake up the operator sat at the keyboard in the control room…RANT OVER.

I went down the M40 a couple of weeks ago. It had been a bit foggy around dawn across the south of england. when i went onto the M25 anti clock, the Matrix was saying FOG. this was at 4pm in the afternoon, in clear blue sky sunny weather. Surely there must be a window that someone at the HA can look out of!
Not having a go at HATO’s i know it’s not as easy as some think to work on motorways, but I see it every day, incorrect or old information on the matrix, as I’m sure do most other drivers on here, with all this technology, and the millions that must have been spent on the system, there should be no need for a hotline number to tell them about mistakes

Have Brough services got any diesel yet?

The J8 closure was on the boards southbound, it said J8-J7 rather than just J8 and the diversion via M5 J1 so I went the toll road. It’s supposed to be every night until November 11th.

I was travelling north on the M40 near Wycombe just after lunchtime today and saw a car fire being put out (looked like a Merc CLK or similar). Loads of steam and HATOs had put in temporary road closure, not having a go at them but would like to ask is this their decision or do they do it at the request of the Fire Brigade or Police? The smoke/ steam was not blowing over the carriageway and driver of crispy car had stopped it as far away from the live lanes as possible.
Credit where credits due, I came back past the scene about an hour or so later and the only trace of it was a scorched area and puddles of water.

Fire brigade ask for a full closed lane between them and moving traffic. So if the fire tender is parked in lane 1 at an incident, we have to close lanes 1 & 2, but we do try to get them to stop behind the problem vehicle in the same lane, so then we only need to close 1 lane. They require this because they need to get equipment out of the lockers on the sides of the fire tender.

There’s one on the A19 that hasn’t had any for weeks as well. I think the matrix board is borked (just like all the ■■■■■■■ others).

A reasonable, and helpful response to the OP, in my opinion.

Cue an ALL IN CAPITALS, typically paranoid response from Mr.SHOUTY. The TNUK BLOWHARD. :unamused: Who appears to be suffering from work related – " I can,t find me way around"-- stress syndrome.

+1 :smiling_imp:

The matrix signs are there to provide information to those of us who are using the road network.
So try putting some relevant information on them.

I left the M4 onto the clockwise M25 last night and the matrix signs were displaying that J23 was shut.
That is relevant to anyone who would want to use the A1 or the services at south mimms. So far so good.

What the matrix didn’t say was that there was only 1 lane open from J21 for the M1 past J23 for the A1.
Therefore I spent an hour sitting in traffic as everyone had to use the outside lane.
There were a number of options open to me had I known in advance. I could have gone anti clockwise around the M25 or left the motorway at J21a and gone around to J22. Amongst others.
Just give us the information and let us make the choice.

How many of those vehicles would have taken another route to avoid sitting in an unnecessary traffic jam.
It is so simple to resolve. That is why it is so annoying.

Rant over. Carry on.
