Hi Lou,

I have what is considered to be HBP - it’s borderline really. I’m a 48 yr old male, veggie, non-smoker, drink less than 1 pint in a week (I can’t afford to be an alcoholic lol). I exercise daily, but have a very at times stressful job.

It’s stress that puts it up, not just food and lack of exercise so speak to your GP. You can still take pills for HBP and pass the medical, just declare it! I passed a Class 1 medical for being an Airline Pilot, so nothing that cannot be managed.

Thankyou for your reply, i lost my partner to covid and things have been pretty stressful really. What sort of levels were you getting if you dont mind me asking? Blimey you were an airline pilot? Nice one, howcome the change?

I showed my wife this post, she helps recuperate stroke patients and gets them back on their feet, others do speech therapy after a stroke, they are looking after a stroke patient who is 33, never smoked, never drank, is of an average weight and BMI.

That’s why uncontrolled BP is called The Silent Killer

Thanks wheelnut, your wife sounds a good person…I have also worked in care altho a different type and its not easy at the best of times. The levels must of been sky high for a stroke to of occurred? I have not stated any personal levels myself so its been quite eye opening to notice how people have been jumping to conclusions.

I’m sorry for your loss Lou.

I have a PPL so i can fly the little planes and I needed the class 1 medical so I could do a Commercial Pilots Licence CPL and fly passengers for money, but the downturn and facing being in 46k debt wasn’t really for me, before I started just made sure I could pass the medical, before I decided to take the risk.

My BP was borderline and was advised if it got higher I would have to get pills, that doesn’t mean you cannot drive as for reading, err it was 160-180 over 90-105, just did a reading after a long walk home and it’s 160/105 which is quite high, but manageable without meds currently. As I said, don’t fear the GP, if you think it’s high get tested and you can always get a home BP monitor to check. Stress is also a killer, so your recent loss may have added to your situation.
