HIAB Training

Can anyone shed any light as to what is involved and how difficult it is?

I have just been offered a job but its on a HIAB vehicle but I don’t have the certificate.

Also, how much if I went for it myself■■?

Thanks

THIS HELP ?

Yeah, thanks ROG.

I did a search and read a couple of threads but not that one

Gets a bit pricey does it not

I had a look at the link for ADR that you posted aswell.

OK, I’ll ask a different question for the same topic.

What conditions have to be met to get help from the jobcentre??

I haven’t signed on in years and seem to think you have to be on the JC books for ‘X’ amount of time.

You could try asking the company offering you the job to put you through your HIAB ticket explaining you would be willing to pay it back if required.

hey fella, hope this helps but heres how i got my hiab ticket.
I got a job driving for Jewsons delivering building materials, obviously need a hiab for that ,so i was sent to bradford for 5 days training. Even if you already had a ticket you were sent away on this course. it wasn’t all hiab, there was your regular h + s pish etc. However the training was spot on and i’ve never had any trouble using a crane since, as long as i’ve stuck to the basic principles we were taught. ( it was all paid for as well, which was nice!).
I left that job after a year because the wage was awful, i now deliver plant and steel containers etc. for a lot more money, and my crane is regularly used. This job is in the process of upgrading my certificate to a CPCS certificate basically because it’s more widely accepted in the construction industry.
However you go about getting your ticket make sure you get a good reputable company to teach you (check for ALLMI, CPCS, etc accreditation), i’ve had to help a few less well qualified drivers out who were never shown how to use stabiliser legs, how to use a brick grab etc. One guy didn’t even understand he needed his handbrake on to use his crane, not their fault, they just had such poor tuition that they made mistakes.

my father was a haulier, this is how i came into the job…
back in 1971 when i first got my license to drive he had a rigid lorry, used to deliver concrete blocks/bricks.
he then got a second one which i drove.
we got atlas cranes on the 2 trucks.we did try a hiab and they were not so good.we gave it back.
i thought myself how to use the crane and within a few weeks felt very comptent and never had any accidents.
roll on years,i had given up owner driving, tried to get a job of a concrete block haulier, just to get the knock back for having no cert.
how does one get a qualification to give out certs?
i see prices of £450for the user course.
this seem over the top considering that they are not rocket science to operate and dont need a week to learn about.
this health and safety and education for a basically unskilled job seem to me to be a job for the boys, another way of robbing people.

I got my HIAB this year it is a doddle, my firm paid for it it was part of the package for the job
It is easy to use just take your time and watch out for muppetts who like to walk under the grab

I fancied doing my HIAB once, Then when a neighbour was having some building work done and the guy in the truck made his delivery on a god awful horribly wet day it kinda put me off

Cheers peeps.

The only HIAB jobs around here lately are - suprise suprise - AGENCY !!!

And they wont put you through.

Ok heres how bad Driver Liar are. I have a full PSV (PCV in new money).

They have had a call from someone needing a psv driver. Ok its only 4 hours a day for probably crap money but hey ho, it work and more importantly, cash.

They had the cheek to ask ME if I KNEW of a psv driver that would be willing to do it, but when I asked who it was for, they refused to tell me and even said it wouldnt be enough for me !!!

CHEEKY BARSTOOLS. I have had just over 2 weeks worth of work in 5 months with them and they have the front to say this psv job wouldnt be enough !!! :open_mouth:

I was quoted £175 + vat to do a one day refesher course yesterday

the course is fairly simple you have to set the stabilers legs up, unfold the crane, lift a load onto the truck at the front, the middle and the rear of the loadbed, unload from the front middle and rear and then fold the crane back up and put the stabilers back

thats more (cash and work) for a refresher than I did for my ticket !!!

I did a bit of work for driver liar too, what an experience! Never again, you live and learn i guess…

how right you are.
its not the crane user thats need the license,it is the muppets as you say…
i could still operate a truck mounted crane safely and no need to pay people who are in a jobs for the boys job to get a license to do so.
theres so many more like me.
its all a scam and health and safety gone mad.
now we have this stupid drivers cpc from next year.
us exsisting hgv license holders will get an automatic 5 year cpc.
and after 5 years we have to show we have had 35 hours training.,to show our competence.
if we need to be tested in 5 years time,
why are giving us an automatic cpc next year, then checking out capabilities in 5 years time.
if they were really worried about out capabilities,
they would be insisting on the cpc now.
this is another money making scheme, not an interest in safe driving.
jobs for the boys.
