What is with the variance in speed limiters?
Like some trucks are obviously doing nearly 60 mph if not slightly above.
I’m not talking about going downhill either im talking about on a flat section of road.
I remember being told that some firms put on very worn tyres on there trucks when getting speed limiters calbriated. Is this true?
Yes some of it is down to tyre tread level
My truck had worn tyres on drive that had done 180k
I’ve gained 3 mph and now got new tyres due to a puncture I’ve gone e from 52mph to 55mph
You will get a speed differential between trucks that “should” be the same spec, gearbox, tyres etc. We got a load of 69 plate brand spanking R450’s (all set to 53mph but thats another issue that is apparently soon to be rectified) All set with brand new tyres, less than 500 k’s on them. Some did the “full” 53mph on the gps, others struggled to make 50 straight out of the box despite showing 53 on the speedo We have trucks that drivers will try to grab as they are “a fast one” Even the older 67 plate G series we have there are fast ones and slow ones, and it aint tyres as they have been the same since they were brand new.
Had the 2 year recalibrate last year. Had worn tyres on at the time. Not long after I had a new set put on and was able to touch 58mph on the flat.
Tyres are getting worn now and im just touching 57mph. Going to have to tell the boss its time for some new tyres again
Maybe its just my time working for supermarkets. But I am quite happy plodding along doing 50mph.
Actually, I prefer it. If you sit on the limiter you just get in stupid elephant races with other trucks.

I actually put the limiter on 54-55mph. The extra is for overtaking. Really handy when you get the mongs that you move over for to allow them to slip on only for them to leave you on the outside. Foot to the floor and watch their gormless expression as you cruise past.

I had experience of this last year with a supermarket, trouble was I got a newer lorry with predictive cruise control and plodded along in lane one thinking all was good then realised I was only going 48 as lorry had slowed to accommodate another slow poke in front. Pulled out and was soon back up to 56! Even better on the newer ones with 90km limit!
It makes absolutely no difference what your limiter is set at. If you check your average speed stats for a single or multiple journeys you’ll probably be averaging around 41-42mph with a 50mph limiter and 42-43mph with a 56.6mph. So after 7-8hrs driving, in a day, you might have saved 7-8 minutes!!! Mind you if you can’t reverse you’ll lose twice that in shunts at your drops, or if you can’t go around bends or roundabouts you’ll lose it there too!! How many times have you flown past a slow wagon on, say, the M40 only for ‘ME’ to pass you on a roundabout before Brackley and then you pass me again on the A43 between Towcester and the M1!! All that speed got you nowhere on the straights if you can’t go round roundabouts!!
Take it easy, you’re going to give yourselves heart attacks to arrive 90 seconds before the old boy who’s been cruising at 50mph, who pulls up right behind you, as you queue for 30 minutes to get through security at the gate of where ever you were sent to!!!

Five years ago I started working for a company who limit their vehicles to 52mph, and at first I felt a bit miserable, but after 5 years of it I find I’m a lot more relaxed driving and love the slightly slower pace. I set it to 51 so I get that extra click on the rare occasions I overtake somebody at 51.000001 mph. I recommend slowing down a tiny bit to everybody. Clocking off as early as humanly possible shouldn’t be the sole imperative of everybody everyday.

I agree entirely, a less stressful day, a less stressful life, I sussed that one out many years ago when my owner driver days ended.
Do your job as best as you can, but leave the stress to the boss, if you’re limited to 52/3 you can only do what you can do, if it is late the ■■■■ world ain’t going to end.
But you’re wasting your time mate, the general mindset today with most of em is , go like ■■■■, sit on that limiter, and stress out routinely saving those very few minutes everyday, heading for that first heart attack.
You can not educate pork.

[emoji38] Ok I take it back, it seems you can educate pork, but not these tear arse clowns.
Seems I was being to kind to them…, and I was underestimating pork.
Official!
Lorry drivers are thicker than pork rashers.
Most days on motorway I’m.happy to plod at 2km under the limiter (think juddian stated this once) leaves room to go faster when needed. I just got caught out by the adaptive cruise control and soon ended up at 45! My worst memory was a 2.5 hour trip down the a14 on a Sunday stuck at 52 mph boy did that felt like a week in one day! That road is boring enough in a van at 70!

Yup, good memory you have there, luckily my old girl has quite a turn of speed when needed so can usually get away from tailgaters or others who mess you about.
Been doing it a long time, but my cruise is my desired speed, don’t have adaptive cruise thankfully and would switch it off if fitted, also switch off eco cruise or whatever rubbish they call it, if i’m doing 53 i’m doing 53 continually until i, not the sodding box of tricks, decide otherwise.
Quite enough tin pot elected dictators in the present govt opposition police and increasingly our fellow citizens to go round without the bloody wagon dictating orders as well.
yup, run tyres on the bare minimum tread depth and inflate then half of what they supposed to be, creates enough drag to get the 90k limiter set at around 93-98k. makes a hell of a differnce in total kilometers at the end of a week, trust me

… not much good letting tyres down now really, pretty much every place now checks pressures before calibration. Especially if they are half pressure or near that… will stand out like a sore thumb
our trucks are always at the fast end but even if you’re not using it all the time it’s certainly a massive help when you’re loaded, running 12ft plus width. For example, if we were to run slower, every man and his dog comes past which means you try and keep as far left as possible to avoid contact (as they refuse to straddle two lanes while they pass you) therefore your load is protruding far into the hard shoulder and you can’t see miles ahead due to lorries in front, which could obviously be catastrophic if a wagon is broken down ahead… so you drop back further and the cycle repeats itself. Being faster, we can be more in control of the situation and are ahead of most others which is much better. Its not a major issue if someone is tailing me, a broken down vehicle in the hard shoulder poses no danger to them. I think too many forget this when they match my speed on the flat, overrun a little on a hill then plonk themselves right in front of me
