HGV/Motorhome insurance

I’ve gone and bought a ex BT Leyland Daf puddle jumper off of fleabay for a few grand. It’s already been converted into a motorhome but it’s still registered as an hgv.

Can anyone recommend motorhome or hgv insurance companies that I could get in touch with. I’ve tried a motorhome comparison site but they were asking silly money. Cheers for any help.

If it’s older than 15 yrs you can get it on a classic Hgv policy for around £100 .

I use Caravan Guard 01422 501 084, for my Swift Suntour Coachbuilt Motor Home 2002 on a Ducato Chassis 2ltr engine.
Cost me £272 including UK Breakdown this year.
£338.50 last year with Euro Breakdown.

I have my 10t dodge commando with Adrian flux, £220 a year fully comp, that includes windscreen cover, insured to drive any vehicle and full euro cover.

Thanks all, most helpful.

Dont foget to show us the pictures.

If it’s registered as a private HGV then it may need to be insured as one. However several people I know have successfully insured ad a camper after getting a motorhome MOT.

Some insurers will happily insure it as a motorhome, so long as you meet other requirements. Usually this will mean having access to another vehicle, not carrying goods, etc. You also may be required to be a member of a caravanning club. The cheapest to join, at £10, is motorhome fun (motorhomefun.co.uk/portal/)

Others won’t, but you can still save money by making it clear it’s not your main vehicle or in constant use. Actually getting the vehicle re-registered as a motor caravan is much harder than it used to be, as the end rest must now ‘look like a motorhome’ (i.e. look like a Hymer or similar).

The cut off for most classic insurance is often 25. Footman James is very good for classic insurance.

Other ways to save money include getting the weight down-rated to under 7.5t or 3.5t depending on the vehicle; a relatively easy process.

Generally speaking you may need to go via a broker. The NFU are very good for larger vehicles.

If you get really stuck Adrian Flux will insure nearly anything, though they aren’t the cheapest and their customer service can be variable.

If I were you I would top up the life insurance while you are at it.

A puddle jumper that is probably up near its gross already.

(zb) your luck.
