Just realised I turned 45 two weeks ago , I’ve heard nothing from the DVLA about a medical, is there a time limit to get it done or did it have to be done before my 45th birthday ?my driving licence shows my lorry driving entitlement ends in 2016 . Has the age been raised to 48 ? Or of not what is that 2016 thing about?
Yep you’ve missed it, get online and order the forms mate, your entitlement runs till 2016, but from 45 yrs onwards you have to have a medical every 5 years, and have renewed your license by your birthday. You are not at this time licensed to drive HGV. but provided you pass your medical your entitlement will recommence
Cheers mate, I’m going to send of for a provisional bus drivers licence which requires a medical . If I sent this of with my medical pass would this cover my Hgv as well? Two birds with one stone and all that.

INCORRECT
Next medical due in 2016 = 100% certain

If the licence is valid to 2016 I don’t see why.

If you have not got D provisional already on the paper part then you will need a D4 medical for PCV
If you do that medical then it will count for both LGV & PCV for the next 5 years
Thanks Rog you are a star.
When did you do your last D4 medical - curious
Rog is correct , I passed my LGV at 40+ so they gave me an extra 11 months before I needed my first medical then due to my BP being high and having to be retested I now running about 14 months over
I sure you safe until 2016 mate
Try telling DVLA that they have given you too long on your LGV expiry date and they will tell you that they are correct and you are wrong - seriously
My last D4 medical was 5 years ago at age 50 but this year my photo needed renewing so I took the form to the PO and for £24.50 I got a new style driving licence with the LGV expiry dated 2018
I called them to find out why and they said the new EU directive licence rules meant that was right
Thanks DVLA - 10 years between D4 medicals AND … no more 3 year eye checks !!!

I stand well and truly corrected. I didnt realise that the DVLA could actualy workout that some one may have had a medical less than 5 years before their 45th birthday, and date the license expiry to fit, that seems far to logical for them.
Too anybody getting near to their license expiry, dont rely on DVLA to send out the stuff to you in time, last year I waited for then had a mad scramble chasing them up, just managed to renew with a few days to go. next time I will just order online early, as I ended up doing last year
Careful if thinking about doing it early because the 5 year period starts from when DVLA issue the licence not from the current expiry date

I mean getting the forms in, last year I ended up applying online for the forms with 3 weeks to go, then both lots arrived in the post about 4 days later, had the medical bloody sharpish, sent the form back first class recorded delivery, and got my license back just a few days before my 45 th birthday, thats to close for my liking was originaly told that the DVLA send everthing out 6 weeks beforehand, wont trust them to do that next time but thanks anyway
