HGV LGV TRAINING

Automatic or manual? if you learn in an auto, that’s all you can drive. Learn in a manual and you can drive both

EH !!

If you have manual car then passing in LGV auto gets LGV manual

Or did I miss the point here

If you take your LGV test in an auto truck you cant legally drive a manual truck is what he is saying. The same rules as in cars. So it is best to take your test in a manual truck so you can drive both.

TheFaz:

The rules changed a while back, I can’t remember if it was early this year or last year but the rules have changed.

If you have a car licence that allows you to drive manual vehicles you can now do the HGV test in an automatic and it qualifies you to drive manual HGV vehicle as well as automatics.

There are plenty of people on this board who have taken advantage of the rule change and done the HGV test in an automatic.

Some of us think it’s wrong but the topics been done to death and it’s not going to change again so…

Looks bad when a member claiming to be Gavin from GTG LGV training says it :open_mouth:

Hi guys,

New to the forum and to trucking, Found the advice on here superb and have actually learnt a lot just by listening etc to people on here,so thanks very much,

First thread was this one for me as i want to have as much knowledge as i can not to get burned and make a good choice of trainer/But first what i can do (pay individually) medical/theory etc rather than paying extra for a big package,

No doubt i will probably be picking your brains as i continue my journey,

I have just booked my medical for the end of the month,

I got the link off this thread, went with COTSWOLD MEDICAL - I Live in weston super mare and all appears fine they will be doing the medical at the bus station, i assume they have a contract with them for prospective new drivers through the bus company,

So hopefully pass that and onwards to ultimately HGV LICENCE (c + e i believe)

I Also will have to do my 7.5t (not sure maybe c or c1?) as i passed my test in 1997 :frowning:

But one calculated step at a time, i want to do this properly and not rushed, Want to have as much confidence as i can with every step of the process,

Goal to be a successful and SAFE HGV Driver in the future,

Anyway thats enough rabbiting on, just wanted to say hi and thanks,

Anyways thanks again and keep up the excellent work.

Welcome to Trucknet-UK Wee Man

You don’t have to do a test for every category, if you go for cat C (rigid vehicle over 7.5t) you will automatically be given cat C1 entitlement.

If you intend to eventually drive artics the first training and test is for cat C, then you can move onto training and test for cat C+E.

Cat C1 = any goods vehicle up to 7.5t and can tow a trailer up to 750kg.
Cat C = any goods vehicle over 3.5t and can tow a trailer up to 750kg.(with this licence you also get cat C1)
Cat C+E = any goods vehicle over 3.5t and can tow a trailer over 750kg.

Thanks for the reply tachograph, much appreciated  Yes its arctics that i see myself with only, i dont really want to settle for less if you know what i mean, not saying its bad for other categories etc, just thats what i really want to do and have done for a while now,

I see what you mean, C first then C+E, - Think i may already have C1 actually,

I take it that wont be a problem for the trainers as its common ? to do one then another straight away ? Am i right to be doing them both at the same time or do you think its best to get experience in the cat C ?

Sorry for bombardment of questions.

@ Wee Man

Going from cat C straight to cat C+E won’t be a problem, in fact I think it’s what some trainers recommend, the theory being that if you do cat C+E immediately after passing cat C you won’t have time to learn bad habits which will need to be addressed before a cat C+E test.
Personally I would have thought it best to get a bit of cat C experience before going for cat C+E, but I’m not a trainer so you’d do best to listen to them rather than me

Having said that the best way to go will largely depend on peoples circumstances, training isn’t cheap so some people get the cat C licence then earn some money driving rigids while saving for the cat C+E training, what’s best for you will largely depend on your circumstances.

Yeah thats good news i will be going straight to the C + E unless anything changes as you said might be advised differently by trainers etc,

Worked hard to earn my money for this so im ok that side of thing but just want to make sure i give myself the best opportunity etc, its looking ok at the moment, especially with the great advice on here,

Hi Everyone
before I start I would just like to say a massive thanks to anyone posting advice on this website,I too nearly booked with a broker but got a bit suspicious with their pushing to get me booked up as soon as possible also promising a job with top money straight away it all sounded too good to be true.So now I am looking into arranging theory and CPC myself and booking training and test through an independant driving school not sure whether to to go straight into C+E or not yet though, can anyone recommend trainers in the Milton Keynes area has anyone tried the Scania one ?
Thanks Shaun

Brilliant Rog,thank you

I trained with Scania at MK they are brilliant, brand new lorries and the trainers are sound too.

I’ve been on Scania today and the automatic gear stick is on a stalk next to the wheel, how do I select low range reverse

Are they all auto at the Scania training centre

kirk’yboy:
Ahh I see, good idea, by the way, how much is it gonna cost me for this digital tachograph driver card ?

£32 mate you down load the forms off the net just google it

I’m looking for training in the North West (between Liverpool and Manchester) any recommendations, thanks.

Also are there any good sites or pages here to read more about training and to get the 35 hours as a class 1 driver.
