HGV drivers tax rebate

For those who claimed the £2 a day meal allowance back dated 4 years I was wondering what part of the form do you enter this information? I can’t see where I should be entering this

If I remember correctly there is a “miscellaneous” box on P87■■
But be warned that may ask for receipts in relation to food as they did to me.
I claimed £5day but may work better if £2day.

I would forget about P87 form and just register for self assessment on HMRC Gateway portal.
Total on P87 form £2500max and 20% tax relief on this amount ain’t much.
They also seem to ask for receipts when submitting P87 but SA since online they don’t!!!

In my limited experience looks if you keep the claimed expenses rebate figures down to around £1k/yr HMRC tend to play ball and lodge it into bank without any hassle at all.[emoji6]

It’s when a claimant gets too greedy they tend to scrutinise claim bit closer!!![emoji52]

I might go the do it myself route. We only used to get only £2 per day meal allowance and our nights out were paid at £21.70. If I’m right then can’t I claim upto the amount HMRC allow for nights out with a sleeper cab? Also you are saying that you should be able to claim for about £1k per year then you should be ok?

Think you can claim diff on your nights out payment up to HMRC £26.50per night max think it is.
The £1117 I got rebated is the 20% tax relief on money I had paid out on my work expenses.

“Other expenses” that’s the one.
If you look at PAYE expenses on HMRC website think it does mention “subsistence allowance” which in my book is food/drinks etc.

Yes but using the max £2500 on the P87 form means the 20% tax relief rebate is only gonna be £500 into your bank!!![emoji52]

As I said previously much better to go self assessment direct via HMRC “Gateway” online portal and you can get meal claims up to say a “livable” £8/10day when tramping plus all other expenses etc etc.[emoji6]

Doesn’t look good then if you didn’t send your forms in before July. I should be ok if I go my own route as we only used to get £2 meal allowance a day up to only 2 week ago and our night out allowance was £21.50 so if I do it myself you reckon I’ll be ok?

I was one of the first to send my forms back this year and I handed out a lot of forms to local drivers. They got money and i didn’t! I kept my claim realistic while they took the ■■■■, yet they’ve been paid out! I got sent out a diary to fill in and gather receipts etc, but you can’t put a receipt in for your shopping on a Sunday if you cook your own food. Balls to that, cw didn’t seem happy when I told them i wasn’t filling it in.

When i claimed last year for the back dated stuff, i kept it realistic again. Yet other drivers i know claimed for all sorts…dvds, laptops, sat navs, etc whether they had them or not. I think it’s a another case of something being knocked on the head due to greediness.

Sent mine a few days ago now. How long does it take them to get back to you?

It’s not just the drivers being greedy but Chadwicks themselves. After all it’s them who have put the pound signs in front of drivers eyes and told them they can claim for this, that and the other. Obviously only thinking of their 20% cut at the end of it. We’ve had drivers at our place claiming for Kelsa light bars :open_mouth:

As I said boys DIY self assessment on HMRC Gateway Portal,
easy as pie and no probs.

If you phone hmrc they will give you a deadline for them to have it sorted out its usually three months from when you submit the form
