Doesn’t matter what type of expense it is - be it food, parking, work clothing, buying a Satnav etc. HMRC will allow such expenses against your tax liability. So for most drivers it will be 20% of the expense amount.
e.g. If you’ve had to spend £10 on a hot meal due to being away from base, HMRC will reduce your tax liability by £2. They won’t simply refund you the full £10! (That is down to your employer, on whose behalf the expense was incurred).
How did all those boys get £3/4k back from HMRC then when backdating their claims over the 4yrs■■?
Seems wild high figures if HMRC only paid the max 20% tax relief they were owed??!!!
Waste of time for me. Got offered £700 minus their 20%, and they wanted receipts and pictures, the works. Then a letter from hmrc last week saying I’ve underpaid £98 in tax last year. If you kick a hornets nest, expect to get stung

I wonder if after receiving a bargain, & a £40 rebate from the manufacturer. The 70 odd drivers who bought a very satnav will then try to claim the cost back from HMRC■■?

Fairly easy to now reg on HMRC website “Gateway” portal and DIY self assessment and save yourself that 20% fee.
I hit submit button only last week with 15/16 expenses and no request for receits or stupid “12wk diary” etc!!![emoji41]
I started my claim through Chadwicks but once they disappeared without returning my p60s and some receipts I phoned the tax office and they said I should put a stop to Chadwicks having anything to do with my tax return and they would put this on my account so Chadwicks can’t access any of my details,
I was then recommended to do my own self assessment, and that is what I have done and it was really easy to do I told them I did not have any receipts and was told that did not matter as it is four years backdated and no one would be axpected to keep there lunch receipts if they did not know at that time they could claim there tax back,
But I must keep receipts from now on so that when I claim for this years tax back,
I’m glad in a way that Chadwicks did a runner as I’m claiming £2400 back I would have to give them £480 plus vat for there fee, I used google to find out what you can claim for and just put it all done on a A4 sheet of paper for each year and sent it off to them and they replied giving me a date that it has to be sorted out by, I will update this page when I get a refund
what about the fees paid for a HGV medical ( form filling exercise ) just paid £105 for mine, and around that figure for the past 10 years and before that. Its a disgrace that we have to pay high fees to the NHS doctors, and their practices just for doing our jobs.

Your medical and renewal for digi card, driving license in fact anything you need to pay for the job can be Tax deductible, anything you are not sure about then just put it down on the form and if they don’t pay for certain things then you will lose nothing
You don’t have to pay an NHS doctor (or his practice). You can get a medical done privately for a lot less than £105 from the likes of doctorsonwheels.co.uk

I got same letter this week for £118 so belled them up and they then realised they’d made a balls and told to rip tax demand letter up!!![emoji6]
Iv had a look at this p87 form. Iv mostly been a day driver and always payed for my meals during the day and purchased my own boots and work wear in previous jobs but have no receipts to show for it… my question is what sections of the form do I need to be filling in? As some sections are not rellevant to me

Hello Berty, what you will have to do is print off a p87 for each year you are claiming for then fill out what is relevant to you, (there is not much for you to fill in ) then on a pease of A4 paper for each year write down every thing you want to claim for and attach each sheet to the p87. There is a limit you can claim for on the p87 so if you go above the limit you will then have to register for self assessment, that’s not a bad thing as they will then send you a form to claim for every year,
Take your time filling in the form and find out on this site and google what you can claim for.

When claiming your meal allowance since you do not have any receipts you can claim £2 for every day you have worked, so if you have worked 48 weeks @ 5 days per week then your claim for meals would be £480 for that year,
As for workwear and anything else you have spent money on for your work i.e. Tacho rolls medical digi renewal adr renewal. I would put down anything you have bought even if your not sure if you can claim I would still write it down as they will decide if you can claim for certain items
I would forget about P87 form and just register for self assessment on HMRC Gateway portal.
Total on P87 form £2500max and 20% tax relief on this amount ain’t much.
They also seem to ask for receipts when submitting P87 but SA since online they don’t!!!
In my limited experience looks if you keep the claimed expenses rebate figures down to around £1k/yr HMRC tend to play ball and lodge it into bank without any hassle at all.[emoji6]
It’s when a claimant gets too greedy they tend to scrutinise claim bit closer!!![emoji52]

I might go the do it myself route. We only used to get only £2 per day meal allowance and our nights out were paid at £21.70. If I’m right then can’t I claim upto the amount HMRC allow for nights out with a sleeper cab? Also you are saying that you should be able to claim for about £1k per year then you should be ok?
