Hgv driver's hours in the 1980's

hi folks…can anyone pin the date on when the 12 and a half hour spread-over day was changed to 15 hour days? sometime in '85 i think but some newbies denying the 12 1/2 day existed :imp:

I started in 76. Log books with written start/stop places and times for all driving. 12n`alf hour spread over, of which the max was 11hrs duty (90min breaks) and ten(?) hrs driving. Minimum of 11 off every night.

Went onto graph-paper log books…a couple years(?) later.

Hours jumped all over the place then didn`t they? Plus a distance limit if you had no tacho, 450km/281ml per day.
8, or 9, or 10, hours daily driving??

Wasn`t 8 on, and 8 off, possible at one time?

Sorry, long time ago, and cant accurately recall.

The 15 hours is a function of the reduced daily rest period.Dont know when that as introduced if not from day 1 of the switch to EU regs.We never needed it on Carryfast and I was under domestic regs on log books up to 85 on the council.
Also seem to remember a change to tachos and EU regs for any council operations competing with the private sector like bulk refuse transfer work around the time I left.
Also a later court case regarding off road driving counting as driving time not other work which the ministry won.

That last bit caused no end of confusion and arguments at the time.

I was an owner driver at the time so I was well pleased, if it had been today as a co. driver I’d be well ■■■■■■ off.
It should go back to that in these days of H&S (when it suits of course :unamused: ) it’s 2022 ffs, nobody should be expected to do 15 hours in a day…especially with 9 hours off…AND allowed to do it consecutively for 3 days. :unamused:

You’re right about newer drivers not either knowing it or believing it, and if you go on the other forum and dare to state the hours are too long, you will invariably get the tear arse heroes wjo love all that, telling you …

A ‘‘That’s the way it’s always been’’…WRONG.

B. ‘‘It’s the nature of the job’’…ONLY BECAUSE THAT’S THE WAY IT’S BEEN MADE BY ‘‘THEM’’.
or the old favourite chestnut… :unamused:

C’ ''If you don’t like it maybe you’re in the wrong job…THEY COULD HAVE A POINT THERE tbf.

Yeh I think it was around 86ish thevoresent cluster ■■■■ of long hours and daft regulations came out.

Well the pan-European rules came into use in 1986 where the time spent at the wheel was reduced to 8 hours with spread over increased to 14 hours, however there was so many exemptions and provisions for the working week that it became quite confusing, and many drivers became unstuck especially when it came to daily and weekly breaks, the company I worked for even supplied a hand held tablet (which I still have) to tap in the different details of the working day and it would work out what you had done and what you were allowed to do, that’s if you put the right info into it in the first place! As the spread over increased to 14 hours in 86 then it must have been around 12 and half previously although I can’t recall exactly now, I’m sure it might be on the internet somewhere. I do know I also have a clear coated plastic card with the drivers hours and regs on but not sure of the dates for this, I’ll see if I can dig it out. 12 and half does seem likely though as you suggest. Franky.
