Well, hello to y’all from rural North Dakota. Lil town called Ardoch. Seems the Homeland Security dept have decided to poke their noses into people getting SS numbers. As you all well know, you can’t do anything here without one of those, and a job that used to take 3 days now takes up to 3 weeks 
I’m still waiting on mine, but should have a note of it within a week or so. Got here 29th June, and it’s now well past the 4th weekend, so hopefully they’ll get their act in gear sometime soon.
Gives me time to study for my CDL though… and it’s gonna be a full 4 year valid CDL as well, not something that expires when I go home. And since SS numbers are for life, then there’s 2 things I don’t need to wait on in the future.
Yes, rural ND is duller than dishwater. Flatter than the fens and absolutely vast. Got out of here yesterday and had a nice icecream care of a Dairy Queen in Grand Forks. Really looking forwards to getting out on the road at last. Being immobile is kind of out of sorts for me.

When I came to the US many moons ago, you could get a SS# just by getting a bank account, but those days are long gone. And it did say…“not valid for employment” So I had to get a new card with the same SS# when I acquired my Green card.
Yeah, adding the Dept of Homeland Security to the mix turned a 3 day process into one taking 3 weeks or more…

Just another little tip!!
Let Altendorfs think that you “definately” are going to come back on harvest in 2005 no matter what.You’ll find that after awhile alot of the crew bosses and Jan herself (Even grandad Elmer) will ask you “if your coming back?” and if your positive they then tend to treat you like goldust as it means no hassles, your a known quantitiy,you have your SS number, CDL, bank account and you know the whole shebang etc.
