Help wanted in the u/s

British trucker here looking for help in finding a nice clean GMC savana.Preferbly around the years 98-2001 looking to spend around 10,000 and id like an explorer conversion if poss.I may be out on the price but ive been watching a few on ebay and that seems to be a rough price…Can you keep your eyes peeled please…

Maybe i should of mentioned that im looking to import this in to the uk

Ah… couldn’t find any that new up here for $10,000, or did you mean ten thousand quid? Since that means about $18,000 then that opens up a lot of opportunities…

But then again, 4wd vehicles are highly popular up here…

GMC, eh?..Garage Mechanics Companion!, lol: .Sorry about that mate, but if it ain’t a Dodge…RAM IT!

Thanks for the replys yeah i was looking for the gmc savana you know the big old day van,i love them i had an old 86 econoline previous and fancy something posher.I have seen them for around the $10,000 mark and just missed a beauty all in black year 2000 and in a honda dealer in slidell and it had just sold for $8500 as i say keep your eyes peeled for me much appreciated…

I got a 78 chevy van with a 350ci you can have for under $1000

Cheers but definately looking for something newer really gotta justify the cost of getting the ■■■■ thing over here…

Well, are you sure you want a big American van? The reliability on those things is just awful, and they aren’t very economical, either. I’d think that a Sprinter would be a much better van.

BTW, are you sure it would be legal over there? I know that importing European cars to the US requires thousands of dollars worth of work to make them legal for our laws. Does the same apply in reverse??

Yeah alexx there is a fair bit of work to do to get them ready for the road over here.I currently run a jap imported toyota estima they are coming over in there thousands r/h drive so ideal for us but i love the big old yankee van plenty of space etc and some are so luxurious i was just looking at the new starcraft conversion vans on their website awesome…

I don’t know why people back there are so keen on American vehicles  from my experience they are mostly crap :exclamation: I have seen a 6 year old Dodge ram with rotten sills, a Plymouth voyager (1996) with very bad rust, I could go on forever. My next new vehicle will be either European or maybe a Honda or Toyota.

On our drive we have a 1995 Buick that has not moved in a year because it is a pile of crap,… FREE TO A GOOD (or even a bad) HOME

Ohh, how crap is that Pat? Swap it for a 78 chevy van - in (roughly) working order. I’ll be taking the Cobra 25 out of it first you understand… which probably cuts it’s value in half

Pat, over the years, I’ve owned American, European, and Japanese vehicles. The American ones were the worst. Here’s a quick list of the vehicles I’ve owned and the major problems they’ve had:

96 Toyota Camry: no problems at all

89 Dodge Dakota 2.5l: Engine computer failure, severe oil leak

1983 Ford ■■■■■■: Rust. Frame failure

1978 Volvo 245 2.2l: No major problems, just regular maintenance. Has 225,000 miles on it when I sold it for the same price I paid for it 9 years earlier.

1986 Dodge Omni Turbo (sold as a Talbot in UK): Rally car-full cage, 250 bhp, enough to scare the devil out of you. I went through 3 alternators and a lot of suspension bits, but it was a rally car, after all…

1978 Hoda Civic 1.2l : Warped crankshaft @ 70,000 miles

1980 Toyota pickup: Work vehicle. No problems at all

1980 Ford Fairmont wagon, 200cid 6: replaced camshaft. Work vehicle

1978 Olds Delta 88, 5.7l V-8: Work vehicle. Transmission failed @ 200,000 miles

1969 Chevy Chevelle: Engine failure at 90,000 miles.

1962 Ford F-100 223 cid 6: Absolutely nothing ever broke.

1972 VW beetle: Frame rot, engine failure @ 100,000 miles

1966 VW beetle: Nothing ever broke-got destroyed in an accident.

It needs a new engine (for the second time)

Enough Said Alex, those Germans might have bombed my Dad’s chip shop, but the make the best cars in the world

There is an easy answer to vehicle reliability if you live in the UK :exclamation:
Just buy a silver car with ‘JF’ in the reg plate  My second car was a silver Ford Corsair 2000E with the letters SJF (Leicester), I owned it 4 years and never had anything go wrong in all that time. My last car back there was a silver Audi 80 with GJF, 5 years with nothing ever failing, The Audi was exceptional :exclamation: :exclamation: :exclamation: 200,000 miles on the original gear box, engine and exhaust system. At 190,000 miles I took it for a service and was told the engine was like new  After about 6 months of ownership some rust bubbles appeared on one wheel arch, I took it to a dealer who fixed it free of charge :exclamation: :exclamation: :exclamation: the previous owner had had a bump and put about 6 square inches of non-galvanised steel in place, which was soon removed by the Audi dealer, … He told me it was free :exclamation: “An Audi should never rust”
