Pat Hasler, Remy or Longwayround are more qualified than me on this one, they all live in NY so will know the finer points of the CDL in that state.
Do you allready have a job lined up in NY ? Pat lives in NY so he will have more info but a CDL test is pretty much the same in any state, i cannot say how hard they are because i’ve never taken one.

Huh! I checked out the NYC CDL manual and the rules seem very similar to the manual I was reading here in the U.K. Aside from a few different nuances and restrictions, the rules for driving are, for the most part, the same. However, I don’t know of anyone crazy enough TO drive in NYC. LOL. NYC is a very hectic city and I’ve heard from very reliable friends that it’s already crazy enough to drive a car – let alone a van or truck. Yikes!
Good luck, Dave!
are you going to be living in the nyc area or futher upstate, there are some good, well paid jobs out there but you have to get some experience under your belt, you might have to work for one of the large carriers for a year or so,one thing trucking companies here dont care for is job hopping. if you already have been driving hgvs back home you may not have to go to a driving school for weeks which is expensive , i spoke to a driving school explained that i been driving for 11 years and what i needed was a couple of hours just to get used to the equipment then take the test in their wagon. give us a bit more info and we can offer more advice
I found a local company that loaned me a tractor/trailer for a few hours practice with some bloke sitting with me, then fro two hours on test day, I then worked for them for 4 years but it was not required.
I took my test in Glens Falls NY and it was so easy it was laughable I did have to prove two years driving HGV class 1 in England to get employment.
Look for a company like USA trucking, Swifts or J B Hunt, they will train you without previous experience.
You MUST have a green card to obtain employment and they are very strict since 9/11
Hey guys little help pls , i was wondering if b4 you can take you cdl do you need the car licence first ? i have class 1 in the uk.
Kind Regards Ian.
you need to have to get a learner permit then pass the car test which is so simple its not even funny then get a cdl learner permit then cdl test i cannot remember the exact length of time between applying for the learner permit and taking the car test then the cdl test but it was quite a few weeks
