Hello and some help please!

Hi there.

A little hello from a trucker wannabe but sadly never gunnabe!
I’ve had a nice selection of old knackers but loved 'em all in some strange way. A Dodge Commando, Cargo 811, DAF 45/150 and back to a Roadrunner. I just love the feel and sound of the motor in the Roadrunner, it reminds me of the Dodge…maybe it was the same? Only thing is that they both take some starting. It’s like they have to wind upto speed before they’ll fire :open_mouth:

OK, I also need some help. My cab is totally rotten through so I either need to replace the cab… or the whole chassis on my wagon. I’d like to make it as straight forward as possible - however, it looks as though the back of my cab is slightly curved and fits the rest of the body nicely. I’ve attach a pic. Are all Road runners this shape or was this a specific model? If it was, what do I need to look for. I’d like to keep a spoiler thingy on the cab also.

Would really appreciate any help

I think all cabs are standard. And the bodywork built around those dimensions. I could be wrong though…I usually am! :stuck_out_tongue:

Post this on old time thread, as there are more on ther familiar with Leylands! A few restorers are on there aswell and might be able to point you in the direction of parts etc…Is that body a living van or a donkey box?

From my recollection, the roof spoiler wasn’t that shape on the Roadrunner. That looks like a custom spoiler, as indeed is the front of the box which I’m guessing should be removable by unbolting from the inside.

If the cab is rotten, then you should be able to source another, however because of the age of the Roadrunner model, you may possibly be in a similar situation. (Could have been worse as it could have been it’s predecessor the Terrier.) It may be just as well going for repairs instead, unless it’s that bad which you don’t say.

There is a complete horsebox Roadrunner for sale as a runner in February’s Classic and Vintage Commercials on a G reg, but there is no price, and it’s in Somerset. If you want details, then pm me.

There’s also this on E.Bay which they are breaking for spares:

Thanks for the replies

Quinny - I’m not sure whether the moulding on the front of the body could be removed now as the inside is lined out and I cannot see any evidence of fixings.
The cab is totally shot tbh. I daren’t tilt the cab in case it drops off the hing LOL… and I’m not sure what is holding one of the headlamps in! Lets not talk about what the seats are not sat on…

Trouble is the body is really good and worth moving to another chassis. In fact, this chassis, running gear and motor are fine - just the scabby cab :frowning:

If the wagon in Classic and Vintage looks decent then yes, please pm me the number. Don’t mind swapping a cab just so long as it’s a good one.

My main issue though is the shape of my cab. Don’t mind adding another spoiler

try looking on Ebay for scrapper roadrunners with decent cabs, alternatively, you could try calling Barry Grewcock in Corby, they are a specialist DAF breaker 01536 406655

the air deflector on top of the cab is non standard, this can be removed by unbolting it and refitting it to the new cab

the curved part behind the cab is part of the body, so it will not be affected by replacing the cab

PM sent.

I’m 99% certain you could remove the spoiler off yours, and put it on another to keep the aero dynamics.

The one I’ve told you about has the ‘Luton’ type horsebox, so putting the spoiler on your new one shouldn’t really be a problem other than removing from your current one.

Incidentally.

The engine should be fine, as it’s the 6ltr ■■■■■■■ built in Darlington.

Welding is your friend

similar colour too

later cab type, but should still fit, have the cab, weigh the rest in and get your money back

But would this shape still fit ie a DAF45 cab? The DAF one I had before this looked flat at the back rather than slightly curved?

Sorry if I’m sounding a bit thick 'ere

Not mine mate! Only if there’s something left to weld too :unamused: It really doesn’t look that bad in the pic I know!

as far as i am aware, the cab is basically the same structure, it is the front panel and the interior that is slightly different
