I am in the process of buying another 250t heavy haul tractor , for work on specialist movements.
I have been offered this from a contact in Holland, but I have not had Volvo 750 before , my fleet is mainly DAF, MAN and Scania.
Any thoughts/concerns from the many experts on here as to whether this would be a good choice?
Check FH750 pulling 750 tonne on YouTube. Should manage fine.

Tapani in Gällivare have the exact same type for their work pulling mining Equipment around Scandinavia and have had no complaints.
So your looking at spending probably over 150k on a truck and your asking advice from the muppets on here, really ? Oh and no offence tnet
An example of a firm that you could ask ref the Volvo is Chris Bennett from Stockport, they run a fleet of Volvos but for the Big weighted work they use the Mercedes Benz 8 wh. Tractor units.
That kings ( super truckers show I think ) 750 Volvo broke down the other week on the show and was towed away !!!, have a look at repeat episodes , it’ll be there somewhere
Hello Chavers Dad - a new one , if ordered is about £280k - this is a 6 month old repossesed one at a lot less!!
Thank you for your feedback - two of my drivers say yes, two drivers say no because of past issues with iShift, and since they will be driving it I would like them onside.
Good quality used 8wheel 250T units are quite rare, hence my original question.

Maybe look here
smithbrosltd.co.uk/mercedes … 4-2012-12/
Its listed as a Titan but is actually a SLT with the TRC clutch/retarder system
It might be a bit older than you are looking for, but the fact the Mercedes by far exceeded their own estimates of how many they would sell in the first year since they were launched, and how few are coming onto the 2nd hand market, shows they are pretty rock solid
Thank you Rikki, for this - I had not seen this one before so I will follow it up.
Its a shame I cant find a good used Tractomas!!
I think the volvo is a good choice based on my experience with the engine braking on the volvos I have driven in the past, although the most weight I’ve ever had probably maxed out at somewhat less than 44 tonnes… I presume you heavy haulage guys need to go right down to 3rd or 2nd gear to stop that lot from running away■■?
Heavy haulers tend to be equipped with proper retarders similar to some of the posters
on here
is that the same as AET in dorset are running
Good evening Hotel Magnum,
I believe theirs is plated at 150t, hence one of my concerns as I have been told the ishift box does struggle above that weight.
One of my main “runs” has an 11% gradient on access to delivery point so extra grunt through transmission does cause challenges!!

I don’t know that much but was talking to o/d with a 540 with dual clutch he says he can bearly tell when it changes gear , I wouldn’t know if it’s an option for 250 t though .
I have not used the iShift at 250 tonnes, but have heard it struggles a bit, I have used the Voith TRC in the Merc SLT at 250 tonnes and it is impressive- I am not sure if the iShift is a dry clutch but the fluid system worked far better back in the day of the simple torque converter and the Voith system takes that many steps further
Well gentlemen, TN works in mysterious ways!!!
Ive just had the Heavy Haul specialist from MAN contact me - he has a 5 month old TGX 41.680 10x4/6 BLS tractor unit available from a French operator that he thinks may be of interest to me (and it is cheap).
And yes, he saw the posts on TN.
So for those who dont believe manufacturers do take note of what is said on here (well sometimes), perhaps we can make a difference!!
Hi Edtruck. Off post but could you ask the Man rep why they still insist fitting that stupid cool box/table instead of developing something that slides under the bed out of the way. Normally Man reps say they will ask but I’ve never had an answer. Seeing as they are paying attention to Trucknet
perhaps you can get an answer or they can post on here themselves (without advertising of course)

I think folks would be very surprised at who reads this forum- At a recent trade show in Harrogate a number of the conversations on here were mentioned by people in suits, and not only from the manufacturers. I got took to task by a couple of company owners- and a nice chap from the enforcement side had a laugh with me about a certain thread which mentioned running for the ferry !..My favourite though was a nice chap who once he found out I was “something to do with TruckNet” proclaimed he had nothing to do with it, it was a waste of time, nothing more than somewhere for drivers to ■■■■■ and moan- and he had better things to do than read the drivel posted on here, then proceeded to , from memory, reel off 4-5 different recent topics on here that proved his point

That’s was unfortuanly caused by driver error. The truck was allowed to roll back before power was taken up through the gearbox.
It managed to rip the centre of the clutch friction plate out. Causing it to breakdown.
