Same as you, I am prepared to get my hands dirty when needed, but changing wheels comes a lot further down my list than “whiskers on kittens, warm woolen mittens” etc.

I didn’t do Austria Germany very often in the old, pre euro days, but I did change money there and a mistake was made, not in my favour. Someone ran out of the bank after me to advise me to wait. They, a German bank, closed the shop and did a full count of the days activities. Then someone came out and gave me the small amount I had been under paid. I was well impressed.
Myself and AN Other went to Sicily in the 90’s.
No return tickets were sold for the ferry, no plastic on the peages, too many counterfeits and fiddles, we had to change our mixed bag of running monies for Lira.
My mate stood by the trucks as I went into a bank. Armed guards, bullet proof air-lock type entrance.
The young lady asked what I wanted to change various currencies for. Then took my passport, every single note, and photo copied both sides of everything.
It all went OK, but what would have been a five minute job elsewhere was full on enquiry.
Bizarre place.
Believe it or not, but cash is still very much king in Germany. Also, they tend to shy away from credit where possible - preferring to save first then buy.
