yes you have to tell them .i had double bypass and a mitral vale replaced i had to inform the dvla when i came out of hospital. they don’t like you driving your car for 6week after surgery because of the seat belt damaging the chest if involved in a accident.
hope this helps. and as rog said ring the dvla medical there quiet helpful.
Ps to be honest the last thing on your mind after the opp is your license
hi stingray, well you will be pleased to know it is down to you ,to inform dvla about your condition.because of the old patient confer milarky stuff,if you go to www.direct.gov.uk/driverheath you will find all you need to know.and they are very nice people to. oh and if you dont inform them it could be,a get out of jail card,or a no return ticket ?.
I had a heart by-pass a couple of years ago and you will have to pass the treadmill test afterwards.
The DVLA can be very, very slow. It took them a full year to give me my LGV back, then took it for good 10 days later.
Bit of a bummer really.

You are not joking when you say they are slow. I downloaded the form to tell them I had been told I needed a heart bypass from the DVLA website filled it in sent to them in April I have tried phoning them a few times but all I get is we are busy try again later then it hangs up. I am now sat at home trying to make ends meet on SSP not knowing if I could still be driving or not.

Took a full 12 months for them to make their initial decision - a whole year!!
