Head injury, temp can't drive

anyone else had this?
fell over the other week whilst working in Belfast, was taken to hospital because temporarily knocked out.
released after a few hours, but following morning was feeling worse and sent back to hospital. got sent for a ct scan only to find out i’d fractured my skull in 2 places, perforated an ear drum and had 3 internal bleeds
cut a long story short, kept in for a week, lots of scans, checks etc, before being allowed to come back home to the uk.
now home, and doing what i’m supposed to with regards to informing dvla, my doctor, etc, with a view to getting another ct scan booked.
the result of all of this, my doc won’t let me drive, either car or truck :frowning:
this is bad enough, but the 1st available ct scan i can get is the 9th of july :frowning:
so, no work=no bloody money. gutted to say the least, been doing this since i passed my hgv when i was 23, and that was 21 years ago. p.i.t.a to lose my licence, and the only way i know how to make a living.

anyone been in a similar boat with this kind of injury, and how did it all pan out■■?

I’ve just had my licences suspended for the third blackout in a month. Only told them about the third one first off as that’s the one where I hit an ASDA lorry up the arse at 38mph.

ouch :frowning:
any ideas whats causing the blackouts?
just see your other post, with the pic. bloody hell mate you were lucky, this sort of stuff makes you realise quite how quick things can change.

i’ve done abit of online research into the injuries i recieved, and tbh its bloody frightening what i’ve had and how serious it really is/could be :frowning:

Hi sorry to read about your health problems once DVLA have been notified of you present condition they will send you to their doctor for a examination, also health test at a hospital on a walking machine, and they are their doctors,i will tell you why…i had a T.I.A no pain, no tablets no accident, only blured vision now and again , nothing showing at all… but again DVLA insisted i lose my lience after 44 years driving ,no pension, no money, stuffed… but it happened, yes you are able to apply to the courts for them to recind, but they win,as they say you do not know when anything will happen again…i am able to drive a car to the moon and back however HGVno…

its a disgrace eh. funny because for the likes of us, where our licence is also how we earn our money, no body at the mo seems to bothered about trying to speed up appointments etc to maybe help us get back to work quicker.
no job, no wages, no money to pay the bills :frowning:

got even bloody worse today, as my doctors surgery phoned me this afternoon to inform me that southend hospital have cancelled my ct scan for the 9th of july.
apparently, they are of the opinion that my case, needs to be dealt with by a more neuro specialist type hospital, which is queens in romford, but now i may have to wait till august/september :frowning:

Yep I know how it feels as it happened to me many years ago now had a blackout/fainted /loss of conciseness for a time collapsed at home was taken to hospital later discharged as fine

Spoke to my Dr next day he then told me to stop driving with immediate effect he also informed DVLA as he had to it is his job to so no job he did send me for every test he could think of &more as he said he wanted no stone left unturned

For the next few weeks I was at the hospital 1st for them to take notes of the event ( took daughter as I didnt remember anything she could fill in some of the details ) had blood taken bp pulse arranged for a ct scan had too many ECG &EEG to mention think every time I went to hospital which was every other week arranged for MRI scan also ultra sound on heart as well as a monitor on heart which had to wear for 24 hrs to record everything ( no bath or shower with that on ) yep had to sleep with it on as well

This took quite a while was on sick for quite a number of years findings nothing had to fight DVLA for licence back for car eventually got that back then had to do same for HGV yes it has happened since although never when driving but as I have had them I am more likely to have them again in the future

The thing they did find was I had a fractured back with other things relating to that I do take a lot of medication ( or drugs as we call them  )

I did stay local to me it had been suggested I could go to another hospital ( as you can now if you wish ) but as up here we have 1 of the best nero departments in the country why would I go anywhere else might have waited a bit longer

Yep at the time I did document it all on here this is a very short version good luck hope it does get sorted quick for you it did take me a long time

Just ask if anything else

thanks animal
i’m in the middle distance wise of where i was due to have the scan, and where they are now moving it too. i know the new place they are moving it to is known as the best this way for what i have, so i know in 1 way it will be worth the wait i’m just not very good at waiting.
it does worry me quite how long the whole thing could take as i’m not used to all this sitting at home stuff, and obviously abit odd not being allowed to work and earn money. feels like i’m going to be at the mercy of the hospital and dvla.

tbh, i’d quite like to get an earlier appointment just so i know whats going on with regards to if the internal injuries are clearing or not? seems odd that you can have a quite serious head injury, with internal bleeding and yet still have to wait so long to see if the swelling has gone, and the injuries are healing. i’m still waiting for my ear to go back to normal, and although not as bad i’m still getting some randomn headaches, and a few odd pains, twinges etc in the same area.

someone else has suggested, if the headaches continue, it may be worth going to my local a&e as with the internal bleeds from the fractured skull, its not the sort of thing you take chances with.

Defo cant take a chance with a head injury ( fractured mine twice ) just look at Michael Schmacker the former F1 driver

Know what you mean about sitting around not doing anything I was bad at that as well oh & you not supposed to go out anywhere as your boss can turn up at any time to visit you so let him know you will be off for a while sorry to disappoint

You will poss be having a more detailed scan but dont expect the results straight away a consultant will want a look 1st then you may have to go back for said results

Well, now back in hospital, fortunately near home.
Headaches were getting bad again and more regular. Didn’t risk it and popped into a&e this morning. Few tests, then they gave me a ct scan. The 2 skull fractures are still healing and still 1 internal bleed, so hospital have kept me in.
Been told I’m having another more detailed scan on 1 area tomorrow, so see what happens?

Hey up m8 ,hope you are ok ,ive spent hell of a lot of time in hospital over the last 2yrs ,i know this wont help your condition m8,but if you are getting the tv make sure its one of the bundles they offer,if not you will end up spending fortune to keep sane ,good luck m8 and hope you get well soon

Ha, ha, cheers Seth
Yep bought a 24 hour bundle here earlier.
Hoping only to be here 24 hours, depends on tomorrow’s scan?
Bit annoying as I could walk to my house in 10 mins from here!

It cost me 110quid to watch tv for 2 weeks ,you cant afford it when you are sick,if you want any hints or tips on hospitals feel free to ask ,joking aside good luck ,you will be ok

thanks mate.
well fortunately i’m home
hospital were very, very good. things now seem to be going in the right direction, and the consultant who i saw said she is taking over dealing with me, instead of it going to the other hospital in romford. she is a specialist in the same field, and was very sympathetic to my case, and the fact that i desperately want to get back to work. she says i will def be able to drive trucks again, although it can only happen once everything injury wise has cleared, but she says she will be able to speed up the process to get the scans i need.
she was excellent, and i’ve certainly come home feeling alot better, and happier with how the future should pan out

Great news m8 ,i heard your sigh of relief from up here in ponty

Any chance of a claim?

harry:
Any chance of a claim?

cheers seth, i’m feeling alot happier.

harry. there is a possibility yes. in fact, after talking with the solicitors there are 2 possibilities maybe, on the loss of earnings front, and maybe even a claim with regards to the injuries, which were pretty serious.
i was bored when i first got home, and did some research on the main injury, which was ‘extradural haematoma’ it was frightening, and boils down to a 50/50 chance. you pull through and long term fully recover, or you die :open_mouth:

the ball is in motion now, should know more in 3 weeks according to my solicitor.

Good luck. I’ve had injuries on the road & didn’t bother to claim & now years later they’ve come back to brass me off. :frowning:

i know what you mean mate.
problem is 10 and 20 years ago we lived in a different world. now it all seems to have gone mad, and the way society is today a claim seems to almost be the standard procedure if you’ve had some sort of accident. i think its great for all the genuine cases, but as we’ve all seen plenty of people out there now causing deliberate accidents, or just making them up so that they can have a claim.

i hadn’t even thought about it, but everyone was telling me i should. just see what the solicitor says in a couple of weeks when i next speak to them.

Cost of living has gone up -everything is money these days. I didn’t claim from my company because I liked the job but later they fired me (I claimed for that & got £5k!) & then they went bust.

Ive looked into it myself, you have got 5 years to make a claim ,so what im doing is getting things back to normal and thinking straight then im getting the ball rolling
