But don’t expect to get rich. If you earn a living, you’ll be doing well. If you actually make a profit as well, you’ll be doing exceptionally well.
By definition, being a “subbie” means that someone else is the main contractor. By the time they’ve had their slice, that relates generally to the profit. Think about it, if XYZ haulage is prepared to pay you enough to earn a living and show a profit, why aren’t they doing it themselves? The answer is that it’s normally the oddments, the dregs, that they need to get shot of. And it doesn’t make regular work - despite some of the promises.
I ran 3 trucks as a subbie 15 years ago. After 9 months I had to borrow £10k from the bank to stay in business. Not good.
The only proper way forward, and it’s very hard, is to establish your own direct client base. At that you stand to make a decent living without you being at the beck and call of others to pick up their rubbish.
