But yes Charlie was an absolute legend. He never used to tire of telling me he was the first uk driver to enter Pakistan overland. I’ve no idea if it’s true but where Charlie’s concerned I would let him get away with anything ! Loved the guy.

He was probably the first English truck driver but you had Joe Taylor off of Otipa driving American Eagle buses based in Ostende down to India years ago & the Bradford crowd with UK passports tearing down there in Transits well before the Brit truckers ventured that far afield.
Charlie was from Bethnel Green,spent time in the Merchant Navy ,married &moved to Kent & then his wife made the decision to move to Mabelthorpe which Chaz hated with a passion.

I notice one snap of a young driver in a yellow t-shirt in Freds.He was on Saviles & bought it shortly after driving a RHD coming out of Madrid on the N1.A broken down truck was parked on the slow lane on a bend & the Savile lad ran up the back of him.V.sad ,he was a cracking bloke ,a Londoner.

That was Big E from Saviles. I remember hearing about the accident but never realised it was him 
Ran up and down a lot with him and the other Saviles lads and had a few good Freds nights too 
Perhaps it’s old age but I seem to remember he had one of the left ■■■■■■ Magnums they had though 
A couple of them were left hookers, the rest and the FH were right hookers 
It was on the dual carriageway coming out of Madrid -a bus was passing him at the time is story I heard.

i worked there 85/92

that would be the old one in middle of the town, was there not a bit of muddy ground in the middle of that square and if I remember correctly a bar full of women of light repute who use to come across to Fred´s with so called discount vouchers for drinks.
Correct there Vas, but there was also a good Chinese in the same complex
