Harrison Bellgate

A few from the new Bellgate from Eurojohny

a few drivers ex hewson / harrison/ ellerpack did work for paul oxtoby in the later years.( BELLGATE).mick franks. phil walker (sadley passed away).keith whittaker. and a few others. bellgate was agents for the french trailer co (TRAILOR). bellgate specialised in northern /southern italy and scicily. but run to spain portugal germany and benelux. and ceased in 2004. a great shame to a long established firm. a great md. and a cracking fleet ov trucks. thanks to wheelnut for the photos. more to follow. regards johny rose63.

John Harrison seemed to have a bit of a split personality

These companies were all up and running at the same time but were eventually sold to the transport manager and traded as Bellgate until its sad demise.

Again thanks to Truckgalore for recording some of my history.

wasnt it two blokes that owned it fell out and kept the same livery, put me right if im wrong

I know Paul Oxtoby ran Bellgate when it ran out of Holme on Spalding Moor.
He was the ex transport manager of Hewson Brothers Howden and moved with them (Hewson) to Thurnscoe when they were taken over by Ellerpack, where he resumed that same position.Assuming when Ellerpack stopped trading he moved on and bought Bellgate from Harrison.
Did Harrisons ever own Ellerpack ? I have half a thought that someone once told me that they did ? I may be wrong though.
Anyway, where did Harrisons/Bellgate in the maroon livery run from / where were they based ?
Also Ellerpack/Hewson looked the TIR part in their day, Big Volvo F10’s and big Trailor tilts tramping down through Europe in their traditional green and red livery.

Hi Ringrose,

I remember Bellgate and Ellerpack from my Italy days, but I’m not sure I remember Harrison or Peckfield for some strange reason.

I recall an Ellerpack driver called ‘Big Dave’ and an ex-Bellgate driver called Tom Bell joined Barco whilst I worked there.
At a rough guess, I’d say that was in 1986/7.

Happy days.

I think Tom is on for Abbey Road tanks now Dave, or he was the last time I saw him.

This is a great old mate, Alan Horner who drove for Hewson and Ellerpack

Hi Malc,

I remember telling you that it had to be that we knew people in common.
Tom Bell, well I havent seen Tom since about 1989, when did you last see him?

I might have met Alan Horner, but I can’t see his face in the pic, so I’m not sure.

Martintrux and STS, now there’s a couple of old names.

Many thanks Diesal Dave. Yes those days have gone now, but good memories !

I was talking to Tom in South Eastern Tanker Services in Dagenham about 4 years ago and we did have some old names in common. But thinking about it, he must have been working for Armet Carrying, not Abbey Road Tanks as they were persona non grata in Mr Waddiloves at the time!

I worked with Tom at Barco for (IIRC) about 18 months or so.

If you’re in touch with Tom, ask him whether he remembers carrying shotgun cartridges through Germany, then he’ll know it was me who mentioned it, cos it was me who translated all the paperwork when it arrived. :grimacing:

:bulb: Let’s just say that Tom’s little caper didn’t quite work out. :stuck_out_tongue:
