Had cause to go to Aldi Swindon today

Can you imagine their faces in the office at Aldi Swindon, when, after giving me the key to an electric pallet truck and telling me to do their job for them, I handed them my HGV1 keys and asked them to drive my truck back to the depot! “I can’t do that” one replied, “and neither can I do YOUR bloody job for no extra money” said I!

I know there are numerous threads on here about Aldi hubs, but I hadn’t realised just how many accidents had been reported, until I saw it with my own eyes today, a truck driver with two minutes of ‘Aldi training’ on the use of an electric pallet truck, nearly crushing his entire hand. People with fork lift licences and even electric pallet truck usage, have a whole period spent on health and safety issues alone.

It is time, in my humble opinion, that truckers refused outright to do Aldi warehouse staff’s job for them.

Rant over.

Too late now,all the drivers have rolled over and done it,
This started with the netto rdc in south elmsall…my dad said there was one haulier that refused to do it,robsons?? Rings a bell.
My mate actually has to tip cut the wrap and bin it for them :open_mouth: .
I’m not lazy but I think it’s a ■■■■ take

Demand a full training induction (which you’re perfectly entitled to do), and when you get your hands on the electric truck in the trainer’s presence, make the biggest pig’s ear of it you possibly can so there’s no way they can justify letting you loose with it. The worst they can do is refuse to tip you and turn you away. Guess who won’t be asked to go there again? Play the game. Unless of course they have hand pallet trucks lol, but even then, claim you’ve never been trained, never used one, and demand a full induction.

I used to like getting away with ‘Breaking’ the pallets with the pump truck & hiding them in the row, get the signature & hoof it out of there [emoji1]

I emailed h and s about swindon, there reply was health and safty is down to swindon council, emailed them the reply was that they fill all the boxes of h and e what a load of crap

If you can’t drive an electric pallet truck well I’d question wether you should be driving an HGV for a living…

I’ve done that too and have waited with baited breath as they slowly work their way up the line checking. Mind you I’ve also done a quick repair job with hammer and nails supplied by themselves.

Missing the point I think. Got nothing to do with being able to operate an electric pump truck, but more whether we should even be using it in the first place. HGV drivers, not warehouse operatives.

This

Its hardly rocket science is it…
Although 99% of the time our trailers are already loaded ready to go but on the odd occasion it isnt or theres something additional to be slung on groupage ill always lend a hand whether its handball or pulling stuff out of the warehouse with a pallet truck. The spanish guys always appreciate it and with out fail always lend a hand in return helping me build the tilt back up,(yes inc standing on the tines pulling the tilt over and side boards back in) just a bit of give and take.
It comes across as a bit jobsworth saying ‘not my job’, in a way you do it to help yourself. Always seems to be a UK thing saying you havent been risk assessed or havent been trained ect, its just a pallet truck, H&S gone mad :unamused:

I remember taking xmas trees in that we’re on metal trollies , never thought anything of it when they had 2 young lads jamming them on at the farm type e
place I loaded them , getting them out at Swindon was a zb nightmare ( jammed in so tight ) , I’d of given anything for a electric truck and a few pallets , credit too the lad on the next bay who when tipped gave me a hand .

Simple answer if Drivers go to Aldi etc on a regular basis knowing its a self tip,if your self employed or employed get yourself or your Boss to get you booked into a Industrial Forklift Training course get a ticket.
No good getting arsey about it,if your not happy self tipping phone your Boss and put it into his hands to deal with.

Part of the job I’m afraid. Some places you have to tip yourself some not. I just had to help unload 300 (dead) lambs in Frankfurt market and while it’s rare we have to help with hanging loads when we do we simply get on with it. Lidl & Aldi RDCs are actually my favourite of the big supermarket RDCs. Given choice between an hour in and out (delivering fresh & frozen goods) of a Lidl tipping myself or 3/4 hours sat in a Tesco waiting room if take the former any time. Truck driving has never been only driving and nothing else, it has lots of aspects. Must dash, got to wash trailer out (doing so doesn’t make me a cleaner )

Don’t be coming on here with sensible discussions and debate, don’t you know all on here are driving gods who should be afforded due respect by all and sundry, handle a pallet truck…never.

Aldi Neston…

Will tip it for you. Only because one of Eddie’s ran his over own foot last year and now there’s a claim. Rumours abound that all Aldi’s will eventually have to tip you because of that but, it’s only drivers talk.

Aldi Bolton sometimes tip it for you and sometimes not.

Aldi Chelmsford sometimes will and sometimes won’t.

I go with the ‘get on with it’ side. I often tip 33 boards, it takes me about 25 minutes and I’m usually in and out of Swindon in around an hour. Sitting around for hours on end on Tesco’s uncomfortable seating with sharp lighting, wi-fi blocked drivers waiting area and putting up with some obscure European football team playing in the rain on telly is something I try to avoid.

If you’re unhappy about it, tell yer boss. He has the choice to boycott the place or put a driver in who will just get on with it.

I don’t mind tipping myself at the ALDI RDC’s. You can always look at it as a positive, getting out of the cab and doing a little bit of exercise after hours of driving. I often think myself I’m lucky being a lorry driver, working in those warehouses/cold stores must be soul destroying, especially this time of year.

If your unhappy with self tip at Aldi etc tell your boss instead of moaning on here. Then maybe your boss will send someone else to do the job.

its a folly to bolt the stable door with a carrot …

I don’t mind self tipping, Aldi I’m usually in and out in an hour. I hate Lidl, not because of self tip, but for a massive variety of other reasons.

Exactly my point!
