This is my 73 year old uncle he has run his share of Guys over the years ,at the time Guy shut he was very friendly with Guy MDs and bought new ex factory parts and lorries for some of them with cash as they weren’t allowed to do this then they’d be sold on ,it may take some time to get this info ,however saviem could shed some light as he lives near one of them.
Would I be correct in saying that these N plated Big J’s would be about the last built Dan ?
Cheers Dave.

Will be interesting to hear what this MD from Guy says Dan. The one M A Evans had was genuine and so were Smiths, whether they were factory built or modified I wouldn’t know.
Cheers Dave.

Not disputing that Dennis, they could be what were being built at the same time as the N reg. A lot of these vehicles are standing before they are sold. I will be interested in what this chap says.
Cheers Dave.

This is a Gardner 240 badged and definitely a 240 air cleaner on this GUY 0Who’s side are you’s on son ? No doubt about it Frank this Big J had a 240LXB engine, but Smith of Maddiston had the other 39! now that is a total load of bollox as it’s doubtful only a handful of Guys were ever built using the 240 engine, plus the fact there hasn’t been ONE side view shot of a Big J with the 240 engine.Anyhow, how many 8LXB Atkis did Bradys/Athersmiths run ? was it just the usual six ? and don’t get carried away with “double vision” and “Brady multiplication” Cheers Dennis.
Hi Dennis
Think Brady’s had about 6 240 ATKY,s one Athersmith which was a N reg Brady were L and M reg at that time I don’t think you could just go out and buy 6 due to waiting list .The one I had I had it for 4 year,s.Then got a proper motor 111Scania
The last J’s off the line was 76 R reg, we had a lot of S and T reg’s but these were all built in 76 and had been standing, I think Richardson’s of Oldbury had a lot of this old stock.

Mike Holloway drove this for M A Evans when this pic was taken. Les Sutton who is over retiring age ,but still drives for A Evans, drove this Big J when Roy Edwards bought it.
Cheers Dave.Close but no cigar Dave Cheers Bewick.

What should be a big dark mass of the back end of the boat anchor showing through that big gap behind the wheel arch seems to be suspiciously like daylight shining on the building behind the wagon.
I always said you were a “Top Man” CF(contrary to popular belief ),ready to jump in and defend the little man no matter how impossible the odds Bewick.

But I bet the Big’un had a good go to get six at once but you are right even his powers of “Barrovian persuation” were not enough eh!.Cheers Dennis.

Should have gone to Specsavers- that’s a highly polished side plate on a Gardner8. Do they not do free eye testing for pensioners in Leatherhead?
Chris Webb:
This old Saurer in Grindelwald Berner Oberland Switzerland definitely had an 8LXB in it. Regular driver told me in a bar int village after a few drinks…He said it were a good puller but exhaust had a odd dialect…I suppose he meant Lancashire?
Ekky Thump Chris, me thinks that this post has got more holes in it than Oscar Pistorius’s bathroom door.
Blue dart had R reg Guys, RBA 207R, RBA 243R, the 8LXB Brady Atkis were (I think) OEO 194L, OEO 340L, OEO 820L (had a chrome lower bumper off a Mk1), SEO 479M and SEO 629M, the “Athersmith” one was GEO 102N, I was told this one ended up rolling over on the Newlands right-hander coming out of Ulverston.

WATCH THIS SPACE FOR AN ANNOUNCEMENT,I CAN’T COMMENT MY-SELF AS I’M SWORN TO SECRECY
Ok here goes ,I have been in contact today with a ex Guy motors high up gentleman ,he informs me that he left Guy 2 years before the end of production to go in to the leyland group ,however he says there were to his knowledge no 240 8 pots other than 2 or 3 experimental lorries which were sold to a local West Midlands man known as Dicky Hampton ,when Guy customers wanted a high powered lorry they were pushed towards leyland/ scammell as the 265 rolls and others were avalible ,the last 80/90 big j s were sold to I think Richardsons of Oldbury ,over to you Dennis .
