GUY Big J 8LXB Tractor Unit

ainacs:
What engine did this one have?

Regards Pat

Hi Pat, hope you are feeling a little better, that double drive motor had a 250 ■■■■■■■ IIRC.

if they are 8lxbig j why are the air filters on opposite sides Bewick

Is that a ■■■■■■■ rocker cover I spy, just in front of the hydraulic oil tank?

I don’t think it’s an oil tank, looks to me like the batteries have been fitted across the chassis, if that is supposedly 2 cyls protruding from the rear of the cab the engine is sitting below the level of the drivers seat :open_mouth: Why has it got a 180 air filter and why is it the early cab with the long indicators (i.e. pre 72), according to SOM experts the 240’s were all 74 M reg ? Not a clear shot is it !

I don’t know if it is or if it isn’t and I’m not really bothered but here’s a front view of it off the Dumfries transport page on Facebook, where the photos have come from :open_mouth: :open_mouth:

As a member of the TNCSI team I’ve sent the pic to our secret film investigations branch and the conclusion seems to be that the so called rocker cover is actually part of the sheet on whatever is behind the wagon and the dark bit under that is part of the brick wall of the warehouse. :open_mouth: :smiling_imp:

Air filters are in the right place. Silencer box in the right place. Looks like 240 Gardener engines in these big J’s.

Not trying to stir things up further (honest, guv!) but the exhaust outlet appears to be in the same place and the same size as that fitted with the ■■■■■■■ 205.
e3328 (2).jpg Unfortunately not much clearer on this one!

  1. Where is the air filter stack?
  2. F reg with a 240 Gardener?
  3. and finally BRS with a240 Gardener? Don’t think so !!!

No, no, you misunderstand, Lance. The b&w snap is the one with the 205 ■■■■■■■■ Air filter fitted on rear wall of cab just above o/s front mudguard, no intake stack, handy for stuffing burning log sheets in on a cold morning!
First new motor I ever had, 6-speed AEC box, lovely noisy exhaust note. Sheer heaven for a 21-year-old!

I’ve blown it up a bit:

The rocker cover- if that is what the light-coloured bit is- comes level with the door handle. Can anyone recognise any of the features which are evident from the photo?

To me the wheelbase seems longer than the ‘normal’ engined Big J unit’s (perhaps to accommodate a longer power unit?) and it certainly appears to be a Gardner rocker cover, happen it really is the Mystical Beast at last?

Pete.

Bewick:
Has anyone ever built one, sold one when new, repaired one,DRIVEN one,or at least seen one or possibly got a photo (side view) showing the 8 potter sticking out the rear of the cab .

Where is he? We need a verdict!

I reckon he’s relaxing somewhere hot, enjoying all the money he saved by running 6 instead of 8 cylinder Guys.

Its definitely a 240 Pete. The drivers off Smiths wouldn’t be daft enough to claim otherwise. Also as I’ve said before M A Evans from Knighton had one.
Cheers Dave.

Yes Dave, but we are trying to convince folk who still believe that the Earth is still flat so not an easy task!

Thanks for a clearer shot Anorak, It does look like a 240, interesting that it has the earlier grill, you’d think it would need the later extended plastic grille. I wonder why there is no literature, press reports or road tests on these or did they only get to the trials stage.
It’s certain non would survive, a second hand 240 would be worth more than the rest of the lorry.

it looks like its the shadow from the truck on the sheet load next to it we need a clearer pic

No No you cant have , normally so reliable too , must be the shock of ending up in a Big J :unamused:

I doubt that the bit at back of cab is the rocker cover , it appears more to be the sheeting behind it .

Also , on an 8LXB the rocker cover is almost hidden by inlet manifold . What appears to be rear of engine looks to sit too far back & too high compared with Atkinson & Seddon Atkinsons fitted with 8LXBs ,also take a look where pipe from air filter assembly goes ,it comes down to top of mudguard , & there appear to be 2 cylindrical shape objects ( like oil filters ) at what is supposed to be back of engine.
