Thats a curious Guy with Fleet designation letter as SJ,the designation letters all ended in D,although this motor must have been a Southampton motor, just thought,Fergie who is on here may know about “SJ”.

Take it easy,
David
Now if it had been an “Invincible” David then maybe Fergie could have given us the full SP,but oh! I forgot, they didn’t ship containers out of S’amton in the days of Sailing ships !!!Cheers Dennis.
This site seems to have “died a death”,I hope no one is sat on a pile of photos of the SOM 8LXB Big J tractor units, especially the side views of these illusive beasts!! Cheers Bewick.

This revelation would have appeared to have thrown a spanner into the works Chris! My understanding from earlier threads is there were 40 8LXB Big J’s produced,39 went to SOM and there was one other which appears on the thread. So how has this GLB unit escaped the very dilligent and 100% accurate count that we were expected to believe ! Personally I don’t think that there were anywhere near the numbers claimed,a handfull maybe, but the likes of ERF,Foden and Atkinson could never obtain enough supplies of this Legendary power unit and I’m fairly certain that these three combined manufacturers wouldn’t stand by and allow the 8LXB to be delivered in quantity to,lets face it,an insignifigent Leyland subsiduary that was dying on it’s feet in the 70’s.However,we are still awaiting a side view shot of a Big J with 240LXB engine ! Cheers Dennis.
he33s bells dennis , just when you thought you would get a good nights sleep , the spectre has come back to haunt you . i’ve got some night nurse handy if you should need it .
Dennis
I think you must contact Bakers and see if their records list that Big J as a 240.This thread is going to follow you to the grave, I hope we find a side photo of a 240 Gardner Big J before that happens. I can just see some one turning up at your funeral saying they’ve just found one and do you want the photo in your box!!

Come on Dave ! that Night Nurse is ■■■■■ !! 2X doubles of Grouse/ice and water (tap) will help me more, plus I will probably dream about doing “wheelies” around Hollies Cafe car park at the wheel of a Big J with the ■■■■■■■ 335 engine Cheers Dennis.

It’s a great crack all the same “Bassman”,but some on the thread may suggest that an 8LXB engine is thrown into the coffin with me so I can’t “pop” up again!! Cheers Dennis.
I had a lot of things and still have on my tool box…but there just might still be that Big J6 with a 240 under the cab somewhere…just keep up the faith your patience will be rewarded (i hope / think)

I know Guy fitted big ■■■■■■■ and RR engines in the BigJ,but is there any actual
evidence that an 8LXB powered BigJ was ever made? os is it just a myth?
