Guys, the 80% is a grant from HMRC to pay employees that are still on the books, but taking unpaid leave, if you are made redundant, i.e., sacked, you will not get it, it is only for employees that are still employed,

Ah, that makes more sense now, thanks. Still, such workers should maybe be given an option if they want to go temp on agency somewhere else for the duration without losing their place with their current employer - that way they can make a bit more money and the emplyer isn’t stuck paying them 20% of their salary for nothing in return although I can’t see many opting for it.

People getting laid off should probably get some money from the gov’t though (if they’ve been paying taxes/NI). I don’t suppose insurers will be able to cover all if any at all business claims, either. Tough times, indeed.
