GOV bootcamp

So I waited months for this to open, they even delayed from November to December, I sent all my relevant information to as many relevant contacts as I could within minutes of it opening to the public and I still haven’t had any correspondence.

Has anyone else had the same experience?, or am I just yet again the unlucky sod who ends up with all his letters at the bottom of the pile?

Try paying for it ya sen .

Balance out (i) the waiting time and the prolonged “course duration” versus (ii) paying for it yourself and being able to more quickly earn money to recoup the costs.
Personally, I think closer analysis makes it a “no brainer”

I sat on my hands for 18 months thinking about it.
Started a job 1.5 weeks after passing my test and recouped the cost of the test in 3 weeks wages.
Feel an idiot for waiting so long and that was just me being indecisive.

I registered and selected one. I’m in regular communication with them now and did one of the first online modules yesterday.

Seems well managed, comprehensive and well put together, also free

Help’s to have a job mate

Not that you’d give it any thought at all anyway based on your response.

But no, lets ■■■■ on people trying to make something of themselves instead.

Mind boggling. I know people who have already got their C+E through the scheme, and others like yourself who have had zero contact at all.

It wasn’t meant to be coming across as off with ya mate, like somebody on here has already said , it soon pays for itself within weeks.

Yeah as I’ve said in another post - I did almost verbatim what you wrote. Some never replied at all. Others that did contact back eventually after some weeks sent questionnaire or online form over and over. Then no response. As others have said if you are a complete novice you will earn them the most amount with “online classroom training” being their speciality. By the time you get in a truck I guess you’ll have spent weeks in a classroom. Since I only need truck time and test I can’t earn the middlemen anything.

I’m trying to save money in the meantime but even if one popped up unless they had a soonish date for the test I’d pass on the “freebie”. I already have all my theories and CPC passed so don’t need the repeat “this is called a steering wheel, it controls the direction you want to go in” training.
However hands-on, job centric training would be most welcome but you can’t do that online.

Keep everyone posted on how you get on. If I get a response I’ll also get back to the forum.

Alright fair enough but I don’t see why anyone who could afford paying for it themselves would be doin it for free via the government.

In any case I have since heard back from 2 of the places I emailed, one to say that they’re still not going to get back to me cos they’re busy but they haven’t forgotten… :unamused: [yea, right] and another one which just forwarded me to yet another application form.

So a little progress but still nothing that actually makes me feel confident that I’ll actually get on anything. :unamused:

I wasn’t taking any chances though I’ve been, essentially spamming them I mailed at least the 4 applicable to my area 5 times. Not something I’m proud of but… I want this opportunity so… I’m not gonna lose sleep over it :grimacing: .

Yea, I know me way around a cab and I’d like to crack on as early as but, to be honest in my circumstance I don’t really mind about going through the motions, any kind of tangible progress would be welcome at this point.

Sounds like we’ve had the exact same experience up til now then though… not sure if that’s positive or negative. It would just be nice if it was more of a downhill process instead of getting donked about.

Yup it does look that way. I’ve also got the “We’ve been really busy and overwhelmed and we will definitely get in touch” emails. Also the online forms where you fill in everything from Drivers licence and National Insurance numbers.

I would take up an offer of a “Free” course against a paid-for course as long as the time to the actual test was in weeks rather than months.
I say “Free” because rather than the bulk of the money going to the training school or spent on the candidate, it’s going to a intermediary formerly known as brokers. The government is “enticing” drivers into an industry where there is a shortage by filling the pockets of middlemen and the wannabe drivers who pass and get jobs will pay back their share in increased tax to the Treasury.
So not entirely as it seems, although I do understand why drivers who have paid for it themselves feel salty - its not a small amount of money.

A part of me wants to chase up these bleeding providers and get a definite answer so I can plan ahead rather than wait many more months for a probable “computer says no”.

Good luck and if anything changes I’ll report back

I hadnt heard of this boot camp untill i made a throw away comment to the agency i work for and was told about it as it happends they are running one. Apparently there are bits of training you have to do a typical 1 size fits all goverment system. However i can do my cpc as part of the training hours i have to do so all in all a win win.

edit to add i have seen jobs on indeed since finding out about this camp offeing the training and a job at the end of it. I susspect doing it through a company i belive they have to pay (im not 100%) so you may have to sign an agreement with them.

Hi I looked into the Bootcamper route being the career Class 1 failure that I am, some are good courses no doubt and some don’t exist and send you doctored images of lorries with no reg number or markings, emails don’t work and they obviously don’t exist. Department of Education who made this project through National Careers say that the courses are monitored by Ofsted, but they cannot monitor companies that don’t exist which went straight over their heads. My point? My point is, if you are going for a bootcamp choose first the big boys on the block like Mainstream first then work your way down the list. Mainstream are as kosher as many of the long time regular schools who are big names in the country. But trying companies who don’t have a proper website don’t think they look new think instead that may might not exist and ate only there to screw the Govt out of the wonga.

Ye, I been vetting out the ones with ■■■■■■ websites and so on.

Finally got an email from a legit one so lets see how that goes, just waiting for the juicy email with all the details and online resources etc.

Unfortunately PSTT discovered that the way the scheme works would not be in the slightest bit commercially viable. So, together with many reputable trainers, PSTT made the decision not to get involved.

I know from official sources that the whole scheme is in a mess with training and tests that were promised by the provider not materialising. But I’m equally sure this isn’t always the case.

Given that it takes an indeterminate length of time to go through this system, I would strongly recommend going private, paying your money and earning it back in a month. To me, that just makes simple mathematical sense. An interest free credit card is your best friend.

That doesn’t surprise me: When this “Bootcamp” scheme was first advertised I looked at all the “providers”; I didn’t recognise a single name :unamused: and many that were listed stated “Branches Nationwide” or something similar, which just screamed to me “Brokers off the starboard bow!! Beware!” :open_mouth:

If like me you’re old enough to remember the “Extra Tenner” schemes of the 1980’s, then perhaps also like me you won’t be able to recall a single government employment scheme which actually looked like it would benefit the potential-employee

Yes I’m old enough . These schemes appear to be politically driven, forgive the pun.
The candidates time investment outweighs the potential benefit every time.

Yea, Personally I’m entirely prepared for that, but in my situation my ethos is any training that I’m able to tangibly ‘accrue’ will have a better chance of helping me find an employer who’d be willing to finish the training off if I ended up in a situation where I the bootcamp didn’t fulfil the promises made, then at least it puts me better off than having not been able to do anything at all.

But I’m a cynical person by default so, I take my salt with me everywhere ready to pinch at will.

Im currently doing the bootcamp but i think i am one of the first to be going through it with the company i have chosen which i know exists as i currently work for them. However, i can understand others being weary of chosing an unknown provider from a list.

I have chosen to renew my cpc as part of the lessons i have to do before the practical which has been far far far more benifical than the initial module i did when i did my class 2. so that would of cost aprox 200 and i would of still lost the 5 days work. the rest of the hours i have to do i have managed to plan around my days off or before i start work as i work afternoons and evenings and plan to have my practical lessons in the mornings as well so no loss of pay/holiday there.

I have chosen to do some modules on coupeling/uncoupling and manuvering an artic so i am hopping that if it gets through my thick skull that will free up some of the lesson time for being out on the road

If i had gone direct to a driving school i was being quoted between 1900-2100 for a simular amount of time behind the wheel. so all in all it would of cost me 2100-2300 to get the same amount of training plus 2 weeks pay/holiday instead of just a weeks holiday/pay.
