the 144 470 does exist and it was made in both cab over and t cab forms — you just gotta go back about 10/12 yrs to find a half decent one.
also i just happen to be in love with scanny t cabs (forget girls - i’d marry a t cab anyday) — before i got banned from driving in 2001 i had a 144 470 4x2 but not the topline version so this is a step up — i know what i’m getting, i know that i’ll get around 9 to the gallon on long haul and 7 on short haul, i know that my mate is still running a spares shed which reconditions all parts for one and is able to fit the new parts as well. i know that it’ll pull a full load with minimal effort and loves hills and lots of mileage, i know that the bed is more than likely to be like sleeping on concrete and that there is prolly more space in a broom cupboard but for all it’s faults i love it for them.
the work that i got offered for it was tin boxes, brick and other construction stuff, bulk haul (biomass type stuff). can’t do the 13.7m trailers (26 pallet) that are now the norm but apart from that there isn’t much that it can’t do.
the venture won’t be happening until such times as i get my ocpc and then an o lic.
someone must have seen or heard summat and gone and blurted everywhere like it’s a final decision and done deal about what i’m going to try and do.
my boss has approached me with regards to being an owner driver - i would still continue to be employed by the firm - am i right in thinking that if i take him up on this that i would be covered by the company ocpc + o lic. and ok the mileage rates aren’t that spectacular but the works always going to be there and would just get carried out by in the usual manner just a diff rig. the money for the rig is there - it always has been and it’ll be mine not on finance so for me it’s just running costs…

Im sorry but you are wrong, 143 470 V8 yes, 144 was only 460 and 530.
They did make a very good (i drove one once when my 144 530 went for m.o.t) 124 470, but everyone would know the difference between a 6 pot and a V8.
the 144 470 t cab does exist - if you’re not sure give mvcommercial a shout cos their boss man has one as his regular drive. the other small 144 is the 144 420 available in both formats cos i nearly bought one last time round from the scanny dealer in haydock. also baylis used 144 420’s.
and the 144 460 was only available for a very limited time and not in t cab format in terms of v8 you’re talking about the 164 480 topline t cab or the 164 580 topline both formats. the 144 470 (54 plate) t cab that i’ve been looking at is in the build shed now ring mvcommercial for more details.
you’re right i do know the difference between a straight 6 and a v8.
the only 144 v8’s i’ve ever seen were cab over and not t cab versions.
Own Account Driver:
Someone working on commission selling insurance is telling you what you want to hear - and the quote does sound cheap for no track record so I would guess it will be missing some element of cover you’d need.
I wouldn’t agree with that, mine was only just over 3k with no track record for fully comp any driver over 25, ELI, PLI and GIT.
Paul
I’m guessing the track records not actually worth much then. We’re £4k with donkeys of no claims. Same cover as you but plus any vehicle or number of extra vehicles hired in etc. as long as on work for the company. Whenever we’ve shopped around we’ve never found anyone that’ll even beat it by £100 to take the business.
Don’t want to derail this thread about insurance though too much.

To be perfectly honest, I do think the OP is approaching this with an “I love Scania T cabs” rather than an “I have a viable business plan” frame of mind. Given some of the places I’ve had to deliver containers to, I wouldn’t really choose a tractor unit which was as long as the trailer.

no you wont be covered by the company o licence . if its your truck you need your own o licence
Not sure about this one, he’s driving 71/2 tonners as there’s nothing much for bigger trucks where he works so he comes up with the totally impractible idea of running a truck that’s 1 never been a standard model if it even exists at all,2 it’s requiring a serious rebuild ( I’d run a mile from that alone) 3 is totally impractible for general haulage, now he’s considering working for his current employer with it ( the one with no work for anything bigger than a 71/2t).
He knows less than my daughter ( who’s a photographer) about the legalities of running a haulage operation and even when he’s told what he needs can’t get his head round it.
trucks not impracticle for what i see in the future. i dont envisage staying in this hole for any longer than i need to. i said up top that if i was unable to get what i really really wanted then i’d move which was always in the mix. the truck i’m looking at is for the move elsewhere, for what i see happening after i’ve done everything i need to do - IF i can put in place everything that i need to do then it’ll work. i’m running a 71/2 cos that’s what this firm uses and i need to pay for all the other stuff that i need to do - it’s a means to an end that’s it.
it wasn’t me that suggested running for the firm i work for and if you’d taken the time to read that then you’d understand that — after it was mentioned i googled it cos i thought that it was a bit strange given what had already been said in here and it said that there are major differences between which is why i asked the question cos there are far more knowledgable people in here who know hell of a lot more about this than me and i thought rather naively as it appears that i might get something constructive from it but obviously am talking to the wrong people.
and thanks to some of the people that came back to me i got what i needed in plain english and i reckon that maybe 5 months from now which if you’d read the earlier posts was the proposed start date then you’d know what all this is about - it was fact finding end of…
and the 144 470 does exist — talk to the boss at mvcommercial cos he’s a t cab enthusiast and he’s literally got a shed full of them.
and i’ve never said that anyone who uses these boards didn’t know what they’re talking about just wanted a bit of advice/guidance and i’ve got that - so thankyou to those people (who pm’d me) for it you know who you are.
We’ve conversed by pm. I told you my thoughts on there.
1, feel free to prove me wrong, OCPC has been required for an OL since at least the 70’s.
End of…
2, I would suggest you put a pic on here of the mythical beast that is the 144-470. I personally think your mates pulling your chain with his badge engineerd V8 470 or youre smoking Mind altering substances.
I will of course put up a pic of my straight 9 foden 670.

i couldnt resist this so i my local scania agent in aberdeen reliable Vehicles to ask them about the 144 470 t cab that scania made many years ago and guess what there answer was "scania has never made a 144 470 tcab but we did make a 144 460 tcab but the only 470 t cab version that was ever done too this guys knowlage was the 4 series 124 470.
the biggest problem is that scania don’t produce or ever have, a 14 ltr 470 engine, the 470 is a straight 6 with high pressure injection system and compond turbo system, so your t cab has to be a 124 if it is a 470 if not then its got to be a 480
