Goodbye Durham, hello Essex

We all know the driving job has its ups and downs. Here in the North East things are not good at present - job offers are rare and often at £7.25 for class one work and £6.75 for class two. Two weeks ago a man said to me, “Call in next week - I am desperate for a Class 1 driver”. Last week the story was, “I need to get organised, I will ring you when I am sorted”. And don’t get me onto the subject of agencies - or I will be on all day about them…

So, I am relocating to Essex in the next 4-6 weeks. The OH has just received a job offer there so we are off to pastures new. We are just back from looking at properties to let in Basildon and Colchester (and between) and we will be back there in 2/3 weeks to choose one and do the paperwork.

Obviously, I will take what work I can get to get us settled-in (yes, even agency work) but would appreciate being pointed in the right direction regarding decent employers who might need a respectable, responsible driver.

I don’t need long hours and big wage cheques (although I don’t mind them) but would be happier to find a sensible steady job. I am over 25 years old (and have been for a lot of years) but have only had my HGV licence for 18 months. I have experience in recovery work, which would be my first choice (if I had a choice). I have done supermarket deliveries and a bit of multi-drop stuff but will consider most things.

Advice, pointers, suggestions will be appreciated.

Thanks lads (and lasses).

Alan

good luck alan, brave move…I understand where your coming from,i live in Darlington and the money like you say is bloody awful, I’ve not worked for any north east employer for years but as a tramper I have been able to spread my wings and only worked further south,on saying that, not all north east company’s are the same but the queues are long…good luck with the new horizons.

I can’t help wit jobs available in the area, but you wan recovery work but don’t want long hours? That’s like saying gravey doesn’t go on roast beef.

Depends who you are with - local recovery firm running you ragged or national breakdown company with fixed shifts and a bit of overtime.

Actually, I would do either. The point I was making about hours is that I think there are more needy drivers than me out there - some with young families, big mortgages, etc.

Without sounding snobby, plum for any in between rather than Basildon, especially if you like your furniture and your wheels

Go Chelmsford.

Definately - I’d work for Pertemps if I lived near them.

They are one of the few agencies who organise travel & food tax relief for
PAYE staff without pushing them into being self employed or umbrellered.

Sounds like Pertemps are the agency of choice if I need to go the agency route.

I applied to Kavanagh by email with my CV about 2 weeks ago. I didn’t even get an acknowledgement.

I am taking notice and following-up all the advice I am getting on here so thanks for your help and keep it coming please.

Now THAT is a great rate! In fact I dare say I’d be prepared to do 26 hours every other year for 54k.

Try booker cash & carry on gosbecks road in colchester they had a sign out the front the other day looking for class 2 drivers. The pay i think was £9.25 hr and they dont do nights out and there usually finished early because i work next door and saw there trucks parked up at 1600 today.

Good luck! As for agencies, avoid TRG , but Liz at Reliance always saw me right. They are in Chelmsford but have some good work. Just make sure you tell them you want the hours and its not a hobby!

If you have a hiab ticket, you could practically walk into any builders merchants in Essex and get a job.

You wouldnt be any worse off than what you are on now!

So…The Only Way Is Essex…

Minor thought, though, they won’t do chips and gravy

Tesco are recruiting via there website for drivers in the Dagenham depot.
