Gloucester reg I think on the Walls’s AEC and an ERF whilst from Swindon probably did a fair few loads out of Coopers Gloucester depot, cannot remember name of road, on old A38 between Quedgeley by pass and the HGV testing station. Whilst I’m here was that an old Co-op depot that was next to test station? Cheer’s Pete
Hi, Pete,
Coopers Gloucester depot was just off Bristol Road. I worked for the plant hire firm next door for a while and would sneak through the fence to natter with Harold Read’s drivers when I had a bit of free time.

Hi ROF, Byard road mate its just came back to me, yes Harold Read had a shunter in there, lad called Martin was the yard manager
Byard Road, that’s the one. Cooper’s yard is still a scrap yard, now operated by EMR Metals.

It’s a wonder the truck never went through the weighbridge with some of the loads I’ve pulled out of there

Wonderful pic of that Coopers ERF ! At Swindon they did a lot of scrap -offcuts from the nearby pressed steel plant , yet more useless information , regards Keith .
Talking of Swindon, did the (now EMR) scrapyard used to be the railway works scrapyard? My lad likes going past EMR and on a recent visit to STEAM he noticed the loco scrap line, asked if it was the same place?
Not bad for a 5 year old.
We used to be in there at Byard Road a few times a week when George M Read was there. Out of the machine with his red safety helmet, must have been about 15 or 16 years ago…

Don’t know if it was ever the railway works scrapyard, I drove for Coopers years ago, they always had rail trucks in there, they loaded steel bales on them. A little diesel shunter moved the wagons along so the crane could load them.
Couple more of Cooper’s fitted with Dinosaur equipment and one showing the equipment with out bin on, Cheer’s Pete

They had two of those Big J’s at Swindon, I had one when it was a couple of months old, couldn’t wait to get off the rubbish, and back on a Leyland.

Dont think Coopers on Gypsy lane was anything to do with the railway works scrapyard.
I think most of the old locos were left in what was called the “graveyard”, which was land to the west of the railworks, roughly were the Iceland rdc now stands.
From memory, they were then sent to Barry,S Wales,to be cut up for scrap.
Did a lot of work out of gipsy lane in the 70s with the foden which was my first lorry as owner driver, bought off jeff bromilow and then subbed for him. after that with the daf.
One more.

I’m wondering if the EMR sidings were once part of the Midland South Western Junction line? This went from Andover to Andoversford, part of which is now the Swindon to Cricklade railway.
