Gloucestershire Firms

Laurie Dryver:
Hi Pete Santa Fe were bought by Oldacres Animal Feeds who in turn were bought by Unigate so Santa Fe became part of Win canton but as Win canton already had an operation in Gloucester. Santa Fe was subsequently closed down

Thank You for the information, was Aichison Topeka (spelling) run by the same people as Santa Fe?

Hi Pete Atchison Topeka was formed by Jonathan Chandler and Andrew Hartwell ( son of Derek Hartwell of Spiers & Hartwell fame ) Jonathan was the founder of Santa Fe which was based initially in Bredon near Tewkesbury and latterly in the former Tate & Lyle distribution depot in Stoke Orchard near Cheltenham. After Jon had sold Santa Fe to Oldacres he emigrated to Sarasota in Florida and on his return started Atchison Topeka with Andy initially at Honeybourne near Evesham and later moving to Worcester. The reason I know. all this is because I sub-contracted for both firms and had a Scania 112 painted in Atchison Topeka livery. I hope this info has been informative .

Just as a point of interest (That is probably wrong?) the Santa Fe Express travelled to its next stop from Santa Fe to the Atchison Topeka line in the Cowboy Days with Injuns and Bow and Arrows instead of VOSA, the Injuns were better to fight off, Santa Fe in their day had a striking livery style to the Trucks that stood out from the usual green and red on lots of outfits, a Mr Nash used to drive the Ford rigid frame at 1 time with the Scanias coming into the fleet soon after.

Just thought I’d put this out there…I must have passed this memorial at Mitcheldean a thousand times and never thought of calling by to take a look. Well today I did and what a great spot for a well designed seat to the late Mr George M Read M.B.E…Well worth a few minutes on a lovely day to take in the view…

Great picture Nathan.

Also from Thompsons’ site.
This one has the lightest Thompson steel body, the “Stonemaster.” Quite a good payload of 19200 according to Thompsons. We looked into getting one with similar spec but gave up due to the current race to the bottom regarding load rates. One firm’s doing muck for £130/load, when tipping charges are at £90/load. :unamused:
