Gloucestershire Firms

Well I have the book. Its by Mike Forbes from the Roadscene Collection. :frowning: Its about BRS in the 50,s and is not what I wanted  So I shall invoice ROF for the cost. :unamused:

Hi everybody, Here I have a selection of Gloucestershire firms many of which are no longer in existence. Any info on any of these firms would be great. Thanks to Paul & David for the loan of some of these and I’m hoping that people out there in trucknet land have some others that can be shared. These obviously aren’t the only ones out there, so dig out those ones you have in the bottom of a drawer somewhere and get them on here. Cheers…

The top picture of the L J Bennett trio shows Andy Bennett’s Leyland Marathon on the left with Joe Mailo’s (spelling?) Bedford on the right. I can’t remember the name of the chap with the Ford Transcon, but he had an Elvis look going on with some very impressive sideburns. The yard was in Hempstead down the Bristol road in Gloucester where Ski Tyres are now. Jacquie De Creed lived next door to the yard at one time where the car sales place is now.

The Bedford had a Detroit engine in it which pulled best at high revs in complete contrast to the modern engines nowadays. How times have changed.

May I wish you the very best of luck with that one, Clive. Lloyd’s Bank are still waiting for the thruppence I owe them from 1968.

Hi B407, the name of the guy who drove the Transcon for L J Bennett was Bob Chambers who went on to be TM for Brooke Hogben at BH Freight now living in Cornwall.Regards

This is the pride of the fleet, the dogs doo daas, well so dean tells me anyway!!

Of course. Thanks for the memory jog. I didn’t know Bob was TM for Brooke at one time, though it figures as Brooke was a familiar face i remember round at the Bennett’s yard in Hempstead back when he was starting out.

Hi Ade , thanks very much for that , those Magnums awesome ! I notice Cottswold have a depot in the Shrewsbury area now , regards Keith .

Bakers Quay at Gloucester Docks was gutted by fire at the weekend. Was that the old ABM place with the blue bridge/conveyor you could see from the shopping centre?

That’s the one, Nathan. A couple of blokes have been arrested on suspicion of arson. I wish I had a quid for every time I’d driven under that bridge!

If they’d not arrested two kids for it, I’d say isn’t it strange how so many derelict, listed buildings catch fire when there are planning issues about?
I delivered some recycled sand to the Quays when it was being redeveloped. A workman told me that the large silo next to the multi storey was left because the owner bought it, wanted too much to sell it and then a report discovered lots of asbestos. When we go to the Quays in the summer, Callum always laughs at the “crops” growing out of the roof. They certainly had plenty of heat and water on them last week.

Just been and had a look at an old ‘A’ series ERF and noticed the name on the door. Looks like H.C.Teakle & son, Stroud, Glos. Does anyone know who they were? Cheers…10

I’ve just noticed how many Commers there were in that clip. Quite exotic in those days, especially on a quiet summers evening when it was possible to hear MAC Scaffolding artics coming from about four miles away. They supplied steelwork and galvanised sheet and would run two or three vehicles every night from their depot in Bristol to Dale’s in Leominster.

Mark Hobbs kindly gave me access/permission to use from his collection of transport photos, a few of which are Gloucestershire firms.
With a Colin Martin Trucks of Gloucestershire book( generous gift from a friend) which I’m using as a reference, I’ve sorted a few which I hope will be of interest.
