Gloucestershire Firms

Thanks, yes it was a great day and the weather turned out just right (don’t like it too hot myself). As for the Seddon, I don’t know but I have asked on another forum that I’m involved with so will let you know if I hear anything. Cheers Keith.

Nice pictures.

Pete Smith took the photo of this Volvo at Llandudno Transport Extravaganza. Does anyone recognise the vehicle or the reg. number? Bear in mind that it was probably an artic unit in it’s former life.

Or this one, again shot by Pete Smith at Llandudno-

Hey ROF at a guess i would say one of the Gilders . Did they not have a F88 6 Drawbar on stock work ? regards Keith .

Possibly, Keith. I’ve always had the habit of looking at reg. numbers to see if I recognise the county letters- doesn’t work with these modern registrations!

Hi ROF, having seen TIDDERSONS excellent shot of Geo Reads Comet on the BRS thread with a Smiths AEC in the background , do you know i can not recall where his depot was in English Bicknor ! Was it down past the church ? regards Keith .

Hi, Keith, bear with me if I get this wrong, but it’s around forty years since I last went to the Jones’ ranch! I expect Leylandlover will put me right if necessary.
From Coleford, join the A4136 at Edge End, heading toward Mitcheldean. At the turning to English Bicknor on the left, instead of turning sharp left for the village, take the “half-left” toward Lydbrook. The entrance to the farm lane is on the left-hand side.
Any help?

Hi Guy’s, I’m pretty sure that James Smiths yard at English Bicknor was the first yard on the left at the bottom of Chapel Hill as you come into Bicknor from Christchurch on the Ross Rd. It is now just a farm I think (I could be wrong). Jones Bros. yard was and still is (though it’s not used) up past Carterspiece (turn off at the top of Hangerberry Hill towards English Bicknor)…Hope this helps.

That’s the one I was thinking of, the one past Carterspiece. The last time I was there was when they built me a tipping trailer on a reconditioned Hoynor chassis. They had sprayed the chassis red, then I spent a couple of days painting the door furniture and tipping ram Imperial Crimson. That was in the days before Rothdean when they were Jones Bodies.

Hi Paul and ROF , thanks both for that info , and Paul for the pic ! But where that crane is , there is still a bit of a yard with stuff in it , but can not be seen due to the high steel gates , when i was last there a couple of years ago .
When Smiths had that yard it was surely a narrow road from either direction ! Cheers both regards Keith .

Hi kingswinford kit,
Heres David Gouldings E.R.F. 6 wheeler , photographed at ( I think :unamused: )
Ross - on - Wye Auction Mart .

Cheers, cattle wagon man.

I used to drive the E14 with the flat trailer in the last picture.
David Gouldings cattle box was a tractor unit he had extended.

Could well be. Cheers, matey.

One from Mother’s scrapbook, or to be precise her slide box.
ROF this is the Seddon cattle box after it had been cut down into an artic unit. It’s loaded with grain driers out of Simon Barron, probably bound for Scotland. Don’t know who that scruffy young kid is leaning up against it. Taken sometime in 1971 ish

I like Febry’s Leyland. Could it have been one of their originals? I notice it’s got the Gloucestershire reg.

Yes, it was one of their original vehicles. It was the breakdown truck when everything was sold up.

Nice old photo, Ted.
An image just flashed into what’s left of my mind- Eric, dressed in one of those brown smocks that most livestock hauliers used!

Don’t forget the red knotted neckerchief, unless of course he was doing business, then it may have been a checked shirt and tie.

I’d forgotten that handkerchief!
He certainly was one of a kind. But then, that was in the days when hauliers had personalities, not I-pads.
