Right here goes.Barters Transport was a father and son outfit that were based on Hempstead Lane. Syd was the father, Tom was his son. After his father died Tom ran it before moving to a yard at Corse (between Stauton and Hartbury), and then selling up.I didn’t know who he had sold it too, but it’s no surprise it first went to Newport as there is where they did seem to tip a lot, interesting that it has come back to Gloucestershire again.Would Bill Field be anything to do with David Field the coach operator in Newent?
Bill Rooker,I think he used to trade as W E Rooker and Son Ltd, as you say doing garden ornaments out of a place I knew as Distraker. His son had an ERF which he hauled the garden stuff in but I can’t remember his name sorry. The last vehicle i saw Bill in was an ex armoured beefed up Iveco truck (7.5 ton?).I am sure the the licence for W E Rooker has now been surrendered.

That’s so sad. I hadn’t seen Rex for about 25 years but always remembered him as a really nice chap. He would be pleased to know that the photo of his motor has been posted for posterity.
Personally, it’s good to know that others remember him. R.I.P. Rex.
Hi ROF ,as has been posted already Rex was a true gentleman, he worked for me for a while in 1981 driving a Big J, the ultimate in professionalism and a stickler for perfection and attention to detail - RIP! On a lighter note regarding the Gilder/Warner relationship, not only was Gramp (Grantham) Gilder married to Ted’s sister (Gladys) but Ted Warner was married to Gramp,s sister (Cath). There could be no closer cousins than John Warner and Gordon, Graham,Judy, Peter,Jannie,Robert,William and Catherine Gilder. Sadly only one of Ted’s offspring survives - Barbara the eldest.

I think the Barters may have been two separate outfits, if not families. If I recall correctly, Sid was manager at Over garage until his passing. Not sure about this one, maybe someone else can come in & put us right?
Bill Field would indeed be to do with David. Bill is/was Dave’s father. He worked for his mother, Mrs M.E.Field of Newent who had a small haulage concern. My father also worked for her when he first arrived in God’s own county having emigrated from the South Wales valleys. I was at school with David, who had a brother and a sister. When Bill sold the yard to Evans & Reid (think I’ve got the name right) he moved house to Cleeve Mill just outside Newent, and went to work at Praills in Hereford where he was the salesperson for the range of Fleet trailers which they manufactured. After he retired he went to work part time for David. If you Google David Field Coaches you will find photos of Dave & Bill.
As for Rooker’s licence, best thing that could have happened!
I was told there was a connection between the Gilder and Warner families but that would explain it.

Hi, LD,
Thanks for getting the old memory cells up to date. AGAIN! How come your memory’s so much better than mine?
H143500:
I can remember Edgwicks very well mostly Mercedes but used to have a 6x4 Daf they used for heavy haulage most of the time driven by a guy called Ray.Seemed to do lots of MOD work always remember seeing various APC’s, Land Rover’s etc around, And can remember how busy they were just before the Falklands war kicked off.Can also remember Chris Daniels and his Scania,Brian Rowlands,Nick Carter, Simon Gilder driving someone’s Renault Magnum with had just 4 single wheels on the 2 rear axles.Loads of others that will come to me i’m sure.
Hi H143500 Chris Daniel still lives in Redditch area and runs 2 bulkers with his son Wesley, Simon Gilder drove the Magnum for Bob Chmwielinski (RPC Transport) he now works in Graham Gilder’s workshop with brother James.Nick Carter rents his yard out for truck parking and drives for Countrywide at Defford.Brian Rowland still does machinery transport, but we are all still coming to terms with the loss of his son Tom in a tragic accident in July- RIP. The old F86 in Edgewick’s yard was GDD 639L which I bought and sold on for parts, ironically I bought my first F86 from Edgewick’s in 1974-UDD 639H. With so many mutual acquaintances, perhaps we know one another? Regards
We must all have passed each other many times, I reckon!

The chap called Ray was Ray Cardew.
Just what have you been eating all yer life to develop a memory like that?

Just what have you been eating all yer life to develop a memory like that?
Contrary to popular belief, not only is Scotch Whisky the finest tranquiliser known to man it also gives SMR (Selective Memory Recall) most of what I remember is local to me as my family home was in Aston on Carrant and I began spending or mis-spending all my spare time in Ted Warner’s yard at Upper Farm over 60 years ago! Regards
So sad to hear about Brian’s son.

Aha! I can confirm that reasonable amounts of the Scottish juice induces selective recall! However, at my advanced age it needs a gentle nudge now and then. You will know the name of the sand pit situated roughly behind Ashchurch depot? I spent a week hauling sand from there to Twigworth in a four-wheeler Dodge for Young George. I managed seven trips a day (regular driver did five) and I’m still waiting for the promised bonus!

It was just up the road from our house and we knew it as Aston Mill as you went past Charlie Dee’s mill to get to it. It belonged to Gloucestershire Sand and Gravel which was part of the Holland - Martin family empire (remember Martins Bank) also owners of Overbury Estates. You will have passed our house many times it was the little cottage at the foot of the railway bridge on the Aston Cross side. My earliest memmories of it are as a shop when my grandmother was alive.Regards P.S Spent the weekend a few weeks ago with Gary Probert at a mutual friends wedding, brother of Trevor and also a former employee of R H Goulding incidentally one of the best firms I ever subbed for with the infamous F H Mucklow and all the old names of RHG Geoff James, Ron Ravenhill, Bob Gurney, Eric Buffin and others too numerous to mention. I saw Geoff and Bob a couple of years back at a Warners reunion and they still get together every Sunday night to imbibe the aforementioned nectar in copious quantities, after all reality is just an illusion created by lack of it!
There ya go- even more connections. I often think that there were only a couple of hundred drivers in the country. They just flew up & down the country working for different firms and impersonating each other.
The name Mucklow rings a bell- was he the bloke who came in to manage the company after RH died? I seem to recall that he was married to Mary, the Old Man’s younger daughter.

yes mate it was my uncle Richard Cecil Jr
Well blow me down. Yet another mystery cleared up !
And the thread was in grave danger of slipping out of site anyway.
Anyone know if Phil Powles is still around? He had a one man operation based at The Travelling Hen pub at Pontshill near Lea, where he was also the landlord.
