Gloucestershire Firms

Me.Paul.101:
James Smith was a bit before my time I think, Don’t know where this one came from…0

Nice one Paul , thats the sort of unit i was referring to , they also did a lot of stuff out of the Whitehead works in Newport also with these 4 in line trailers . Most of the work at Whitehead was controlled by Richard Read .
Can any one remember where in Bicknor where the depot was ? regards Keith

It used to be the first farmyard on the left at the bottom of chapel hill, the firm actually came from Stroud way. A guy called Ben Aston drove for them who later was a fitter at Lucozade, Doug Baldwin also drove for them and later drove for Edwards at Lydbrook.

James Smith is now Rothdean! Tidy Fleet :open_mouth: I worked at BRS when they were taken over. The GV9,s were staggering in the first days.I seem to remember heads rolling at BRS.

There weren’t many heads that rolled as fast or as far as Young George’s, were there?

Indeed,I forget which driver gave him a lift back from Cardiff.

Just thought about another haulier,Soudley Valley akas Bevan Bros.

Oh, yes. I had many a lift home on a “dodgy” from Raglan in their Leyland pulling a tipping trailer. Was it a Beaver?
And has anybody mentioned The New Bowson Coal Company?

Thats right leylandlover they had Albion Reiver high sided tippers hauling coal from the forest on occasoins to Uskmouth power station .
They also had some Leyland badgers i think as well ,but were artics , before getting rid of the haulage fleet and concentrating on bus work , the old depot is now a housing estate . regards Keith

if memory serves me correctly…james smith was a coal merchant from stroud , glos and mr jones bought his licences for extra wagons but had to keep the name so he modified it to james smith( bicknor) ltd. and by chance i was talking to one of there old drivers today! ben aston ,81 years young and sharp as a tack. this one was later to pass into brs mitcheldean.
