Agreed, if they had have just sorted it from the get go, I doubt anyone would even know anything about this, but without knowing the full facts I don’t think it fair to completely chastise them.
There are many discrepancies. Some from the family side, some from Matthews side, some probably made up by Chinese whispers.
What actually surprises me more in all of this, is the British consulate doesn’t sort repatriations.
I’ve never thought about it, but kinda assumed the government would pay some or all of it if you don’t have the relevant insurance.
Lucky I never go abroad!

I agree that there is more to this story then we are being told. But let’s strip it back to the bare basics, if Matthews had of simply brought him home , no expenses spared , then none of this mess would have happened
^^^ This.
Matthews thoroughly deserve the flak they are getting. They still don’t seem to understand where they got it wrong.

It’s made me think about what I’d want if my family found themselves in a similar situation. I came to the conclusion that I’d rather I was cremated abroad and ashes brought back than them spend that much money return, but then we are all different and its not always about what the deceased wants necessarily

What would happen if an owner driver died abroad with no insurance to get him or her home and the family had no money, would the country you died in pay for the burial or cremation in that country ?
They don’t in poxy Nigeria, was delivering to a jungle oil well site near Port Harcourt and I saw some buzzards circling around a little bit away from us. I asked what they were after, thought maybe a dead animal. No,(I was told) dead man !! Seems he got hit by a truck and killed instantly and if the body is not collected by the family it is left for the animals to clear up. Charming !
“Adopting a “Can-do” attitude to foster a culture where quick, adaptable solutions and support are always forthcoming 24/7”.
Unless it involves getting your driver home eh? Be ashamed. Very very ashamed. You shouldnt be trying to call and leaving messages to inform of a death?!!!! You should have sent someone to their house, in person, to wait for his wife to come home, however long it took, to break the news to her in person, its called compassion. You should have brought him back, no holds barred, end of. Makes me bloody sick to my stomach.
R.I.P Drive … You`ll be home soon and your family will hopefully get some peace.

If you change the situation to it happening at a Msa in the UK, the lorry would not move.
It would be a crime scene with police forensics all over the cab.
In Europe, the authorities do things differently, but it seems very fast to get the truck moving again after he passed away.
Without knowing the cause of death, ask yourself this , would you drive it ?
Drivers have been killed by carbon monoxide from faulty in cab fridges .
It may seem dramatic but what if the cause was a contagious disease ?
Itv reports no movement on the tracker, why would there be on a 45 hour break ?
There is a specialist firm that covers drivers in Europe for repatriation after an accident or death, the windscreen has a large orange sticker in it but I can’t remember their name.
They fly you home on a private charter plane with nurses and doctors if injured in a crash
The orange sticker you mention was ‘Trans Med’ , I was covered by that whilst I did european work, paid for by the company , it was 2nd to none apparently at the time.

Why would it be a crime scene unless inside the cab was blood spattered and the driver had a knife stuck in him ?
I thought carbon monoxide was created by somehow burning fuel, never had a gas fridge in a truck only 24volt electric.
Contagious disease … should have used a condom when in the baghouse so own fault.
Why need hate this company.
1.If people died in truck and family or any funeral company assistant or company come next day that usually nobody will allow trannsfer body abroad next day .All this investigation can taked 1-2 week. When people died in UK that sometime taked 1-2 week till repotriation.
2.Company offer 5000.Before we hate company we need review price for repatriation from different funeral companies. And just after we can think 5000 was not enough or good money for this situation. Some time family want simply waste money in funeral but this is not very need.
3.Where RHA.Why they not help??
We have received death threats as a family and our employees have been told to seek work elsewhere… we could have handled things better, we should have handled things better and I do feel the death threats are unjust."
Jonathan Matthews
Director, Matthews International Transport
Although it’s hard to envisage how they could have handled it worse (allegedly) apart from to chuck Paul’s body on the bunk and drop him at the nearest depot for the family to collect, it’s nice to read at least some ownership of this ■■■■ up.

im surprised theres no vultures circling around the m1/m6 etc with the amount of them in broken down cars wandering around on the hard shoulder…you assume what your going to see in bradiztan Coventry and derby etc,but I want through high Wycombe last week and it was like downtown Somalia…didn’t expect it to be that bad as its a nice town,

on the off chance of opening up another debate about gassing, then it would always be a crime scene till found otherwise…could have been a couple of Taliban trying to gas him,he could have had a smack whilst disturbing the diesel fairies and sat back up in the cab…theres plenty of reasons as to how he could have been done in,hence crime scene till ruled otherwise,

Quite, and long may life be valued enough in this country that a sudden death is taken so seriously, and not just tidied up to keep the costs down.
Police are apparently investigating death threats received by Matthews Transport, I have to say that although I’m prone to the odd bit of moderation myself the unrestricted overreacting nutters do nothing to help this situation.
I cannot believe that anyone in charge of a heavy goods vehicle is unable to see that no good can come of threatening the company.

I agree and very early on in this thread a warning was issued to not post such comments on here.

Its not unrestricted a number of over the top posts have been removed- the fact you haven’t seen them shows the moderation is working.
If you want over the top unrestricted nutters then the myriad of posts on Facebook over this subject is the place too go, some are very ugly indeed. I believe we have allowed this to be discussed here at length and managed to keep it as civil as we can. Its not perfect but looking around the interweb I think the discussion here has been less vigilante than in most other places

Perhaps some people are angry, but is it any wonder? I wouldn’t agree with death threats myself, but I do fully agree with the comments of ordinary truck drivers, here there and everywhere.
Hopefully Matthews’ imminent demise will teach other hauliers to treat their drivers with a little more respect, even after those drivers have stopped generating revenue because they have been so inconsiderate of company profits that they have had the temerity to die on the job.
