Can the latest type of gatso camera get you for speeding if driving towards it rather than only from behind as in the past?
I am fully aware of other types that flash if driving towards them. I think i might of come unstuck between bewick and leith docks today in the car
There’s been forward facing cameras for years laddie!
Was it a Truvelo? Like this – radardetectors.co.uk/truvelo … camera.htm
These take front pics but dont use a flash like the more comon Gatso.

Wrong
They have a Magenta coloured flash to avoid dazzling drivers
If it was a white flash in your face then you have no worries, because they would never type-approve a camera which could potentially cause a crash
The camera was the more common gatso, i am aware of the truvelo type as i was following someone in doncaster one night who was flashed and done and despite what it says in your link it did flash no question!
I am also fully aware about gatso cameras being able to distinguish between trucks and cars but I was unaware that that a gatso type could do
you whilst driving toward it .
This was on the a1 north on a dual section and south on a 4 lane single carrigeway with few other vehicles in the area.
Cant be exact on speed as i was watching the road not the speedo!

Happened to a friend of mine at Geddington a few years ago.

Gatsos are rear facing as far as I’m aware, and they use Piezo sensors in the floor to determine the number of axles, and height sensors on some.

Where was this?
Ken.
The camera on the southbound dual section was in the dunbar area, this flashed while i was going north,on the way back a camera facing north on a 4 lane single carrigeway section in the Eyemouth area, both gatso type
I’ve been flashed a few times from cameras. If I’m within the speed limit I’ve not had a response back and likewise if I am heading into them and they flash then I wouldn’t expect a ticket but I would make a note in my diary anyway
It might not help but I’d probably request the image at any rate as I do try and be a goody twoshoes and stick to the speed limits

Same here when driving towards a GATSO, I believe it’s because they’re out of film and/or for calibration.
Can anyone please tell me about ‘specs’ average cameras, has anybody ever been done by them? In a 50 (roadworks section) you sometimes see cars & trucks doing way more than that, how come?

It’s and average with probably quite a bit of leeway I would guess before you’d get done.
Forced to do 40mph through half it due to traffic then you can go flat out through the rest without being done.
The forward facing Truvelos with the Infra-red type flash can still clearly be seen perceptibly flashing if you’re caught. Always wondered how they work at night as would have thought headlights would just cause an infra-red image to white out.
Hmm, so does the 10%+2 rule apply? Because then an hgv doing 56 flat out wouldn’t be prosecuted as the ‘leeway’ is up to 57mph!?

The rule is entirely discretionary and there is no guarantee that cameras will be set to those limits.
The question is about gatso cameras tho as stated in the original post as i fully understand how other types work!
Can anyone in the know shead any light on the subject?
It may well be that i was a tad over the limit, so not realy bothered about the rights and wrongs of speeding!
Dont see myself the argument about the flash causing a crash as i often see cameras flashing away on a single carrigeway road if i am going in the other direction,

I used to trigger a normal gatso going in the opposite direction most nights as it was near to base, and never heard anything from it…
BUT, I also used to trigger the scamera on the a556 most nights, well over 40mph, and never heard anything from that either, but my mate triggered it once and got a ticket…
The Gatso scameras are being phased out. I asked for the photographic evidence and was told that the photo showed the rear of the lorry and there was no person in the picture. This was the reason for taking my £60. with not even a piccy in return.

from dougiew55 this camera was obviously positioned wrong as it is illegal for a speed camera to be able to use flash on your or anyones windscreen
The position of the camera looked intentional to me! By definition a camera flash will allways be in someones face ie on coming traffic, or is it ok if the camera is on the other side of the road?
If a regular gatso camera goes off, flashes, whilst you are approaching it then it is either faulty or something. Not even sure if they need to go through periods of ‘self test’.
There are new cameras that are quite high up near junctions that are the new digital ones, as well as having additional lamps near the area where it would flash in order to give additional illumination. I don’t think they are used in the form of ANPR per event but I wouldn’t put it passed them.
Then some speed cameras have CCTV cameras watching them for vandalism, with other cameras then watching the cameras watching the camera… Some people just don’t like speed cameras. They’re probably the ones doing silly speeds inappropriately

You’re a braver man than me,If I’d have triggered a camera I would be bloody wary of it next time.
