Gas Cookers.

and if they decide that cooking is no longer allowed, then i’d just ignore them.

So would I. And if any company I worked for banned it I’d be looking for a new job.

4 and a half years I tramped at Stobbies and always cooked in my cab! Not exactly as ■■■■■■■■ as Switch granted but never any problem! :grimacing:

I’ve had a couple of the cheapy gas cookers, the ones that go in a suitcase type holder and have aerosol gas cannisters. I thought both were deathtraps to be honest, 1 flamed up as the cannister was not sealing properly. I went back to the good old faithfull big camping gaz 907 bottle with a big ring on top, safe as a house cooker IMO

I was waiting to see how long it’d be before you posted on this one Luke as you clearly cook in the cab in your videos.

I have one of those, and you do have to be careful that the canister is seated properly. For the first time ever I have a microwave oven and I wish I’d got one years ago, it’s so quick and easy to bung a ready-made meal in it and nuke it.

Except your house won’t roll on its side and its cooker smash your head in.

I just take the precaution of removing the gas can/supply from the stove when not in use!

^^^^ what Dessy said :stuck_out_tongue:

my firm had microwaves fitted to stop us using gas cookers but you cant live on ding meals or make a brew by heating the water the water in a micro
so always have a little single ring cooker at the ready there is nothing unsafe about using these if you just use your head

I know I had one years ago on Fed Ex and woke up one morning in hospital due to carbon monoxide poisoning… Never again.

I was told that if I had remained undiscovered for another 5 minutes it would have been a hearse and not an ambulance.

Were you using the stove to heat your cab Pat? :open_mouth:

Of course … Duh … I’m not stupid

Well yeah, it was a dumb thing to do but I woke up freezing because my night heater had pooped the bed.

i use a big gaz 907 bottle with a big ring on top and i have been for years without any problems and i will nether change and as far as i am concerned i own the lorry and i will cook the way i won’t and nobody will tell me different.I am fed up to my back teeth nowadays of people sticking there nose in telling people what they can do and not do i myself can still trhink for myself ps i have actually got city and guilds in gas fitting

How would that happen when I store it in the external locker?
Was in a head on collision in Spain a few years back so am well aware of what damage unstowed gear can do, got 17 stitches where a TV hit my head

That is one important thing to remember, never keep the big bottle inside the cab, even in a locker, they’re heavy and will do untold damage when they hit you upside the canister :open_mouth:

I’ve heard of a few drivers over the years had a lorry over only to be smashed over the head by a jack or tools etc.

Were banned from them because Aviva said they will not insure any vehicle that has a gas cooker inside it. However H&S say that you must have a way of a hot meal when at work wether it be a microwave or whatever. I use a electric oven £42 now boss aint happy about idling for 45 mins whilst i cook but sod him. (When we were told to remove the cookers i phoned local council and got their opion on what work should provide and unfortunately you have a 24v socet the company did it bit as far as there concerned)

Talking of anything that’s not properly secured having the potential to cause injury or even death in the event of a rollover or other accident , I have done Euro work with all my kit in the cab, 10ltr water container (full &part full) twin burner and grill cooker, and it’s calor gas bottle (not the full size) then there was my food box lots of tinned food, plates utensils ect and a electrolux fridge sat in between the seats , rest of the kit was under the bottom bunk or in passenger seat footwell , but when you is on the road for a week or more they are sometimes the things you have to do , if you want to work and earn money , if the company don’t supply the proper kit for the job , that could of been as simple as fitting lockable storage box on the trl’s, the thought of all that kit raining down on me in the event of a rollover , have crossed my mind at some point ,

Surely the best way not to get hurt by all the stuff in your cab is not to roll the truck in the 1st place?

I’m pretty sure, even in an empty cab, rolling a truck is going to bloody hurt, not to mention ■■■■ the boss off.

so how is it any different to having a gas cooker in a caravan?

My comments about a rollover where prompted by this

I very much doubt that anyone would set out to roll a truck , and yes they can/do hurt, without ya kit hitting you, you would probably survive the actual rollover without any life threatening injuries ,but to be wiped out by a stray gas bottle or friggo, nuker or, tv,
Nearly everything we do involves some risks at some point

I used to use a methylated spirit stove in the 70’s, it needed a lot of pumping to get the pressure up but once it was burning it was fine. The only problems I ever had was the meths leaking out the priming pump and then the whole lot would catch fire. Nothing serious as it would burn out in a few seconds. Thankfully the little gas stoves you can get for a tenner are a godsend and kept me well fed for years without incident. Unless roadside services in the uk are drastically improved the gas stove will always be an essential bit of kit for uk drivers.

Plenty of opportunities for a lorry, particularly artic, to rollover through no driving error on the part of the driver. Not having heavy gear loose in the cab isn’t H&S hysteria in my view.
