Jack Hanson had hundreds of Atkinson’s with Gardner engines fitted and i can not recall him having much trouble with them, im sure he would have had some proplems but not that anyone spoke about

Well my late Uncle Isaac Smiles, (Smiles for Miles) Had several Ex Hanson 8 wheeler Atki tippers C & D regs in 1968 all fiited wi th the 150 Gardners, They gave him very good service Plus the drivers liked them, Gardner Engines IMO Were simply the best in their day, Regards Larry.

Hello Maddan, Their depot was on the West Rd at Blucher, Its still there and is a Coach Firm that has it Smiles had about 40 wagons at one time, Regards Larry.
New to Smiles in 1963 & of course powered with the good old, 150 Gardner & a 6 speed David Brown G/Box, Regards Larry.

Thanks for that Larry priceless pic’s from the old days. I well remember those Thames traders, there were a heck of a lot owner driver 4 wheelers working on the Donny by pass, now who can remember when that was being built?

It sure is, it was just about a year old when this photo was taken, The driver Bobby Meggs allways looked after his motor, Oddly enough his is still about & in his 90s, Regards Larry.
I could be wrong but 53 pages and no mention of the 5 lxct ?
i had a 5lw in my youth , pulled well but you could nod off waiting for the revs to die down . dave

Hiya,
Not nit picking here but a nautical pal of mine who worked most of his working
life as a mercantile marine engineer did once describe the tugboats as floating
engines hardly the case here methinks, a beautiful engine in surroundings you
can be proud of, but an eight pot Gardner pushing a huge container ship into
it’s berth would be some task. But I’ll bet I’m way out with my thinking.
thanks harry, long retired.
Brodsworth is a river tug Harry, not one intended to shunt the QE2 into Southampton docks! All that Gardner power will be more than enough for manouvering barges around.
Pete.

Hiya,
Thanks Pete I’d forgotten the necessity for river/canal tug requirements yea an
eight pot Percy would be plenty, I was only thinking of ocean and harbour tugs

Lots of interesting views on this thread, having driven gardners ■■■■■■■ and detroit s i have found yes gardners are slow and bloody cold but good on juice and generally long lasting, ■■■■■■■ went like stink not so good on fuel but cheaper, and v8 detroit in our bedford tm wouldn’t pull (even at high revs)and was a lot heavier 5/6 mpg than the others. don’t know the rebuild prices of dd cos we never had it long enough. The tm had the best heater than the s/a 401 erf b and c series but my dad put that down to the fact that wagon builders who built cars eg ford bedford always had better heaters than those who didn’t erf atkinson foden
