About 2 minutes walk from my house the fun fare as appeared again (it come 3 to 4 times a year ) and as usual theres mainly a fleet of ERFs and Fodens all Gardner powered with Gardner engines in the back powering the rides , there
s some pretty old motors here with a solitary FM12 ,i wonder if the FM will be the prefered choice in years to come

Here’s an ideaHow about the complainer posting on here the reason for the report, this way the ‘guity’ party could take some constructive critisism on board and post accordingly
…or tell the complainer to poke it up his chuff. The reason for the red mist is clear- repetition and deviation. We should have Nicholas Parsons as a moderator.

I don’t think there were any posts on this topic, made by anyone, which breached any forum rules or which would have warranted any complaint by anyone and which therefore would have needed any involvement by the mods.Maybe some comments which some strongly disagreed with but nothing which would have justified raising any complaints with the mods about.

Good evening my dear “Carryfast”,I do hope I find you well and that we can carry on the fine and in-depth discussion about the past merits of the ledgendary Gardner engine.I do,of course, fully concur with you my friend that Detroit Diesels were every bit, maybe even better, and as reliable and economical as a Gardner.I am,of course, most disapointed that I was most foolish never to have put 20 Bedford KM’s with the DD into the Bewick fleet, however,I will just have live with this gross error on my part and just think about all those reliable and economical miles my company failed to reap the benefit of.Anyway I look forward to reading your next, always informative, posts on the various threads where your valued input is always eagerly awaited by all the other members, and the Mods as-well !!Now remember "Carryfast"you are a very well respected member who’s opinion on many and varied subjects is much valued.Regards Bewick.
HO, HO, HO, Cheerio for now.

He may be as silly as a cartload of monkeys, but dear old Carryfast does give us food for thought

Well at least the “great” “CF” takes all the ribald crack that he attracts, dosen’t give a toss, and gives it straight back,a true product of the transport /vehicle industry which from what I have been firmly informed is not to everyones liking on the site.PC 'ism is,unfortunately, creeping into all sections of society and I’m sorry to say that the mildest of “non nasty” ribald craic is not welcomed any longer as some folk take what is said literally, however ,it’s their loss as they don’t realise “the craic” is and always was the “currency” of drivers, how else would we have put up with the gruelling hours and,at time, atrocious conditions (and I’m not just talking about the weather either!) over many years without a bit of “craic” and as well, dare I say, a bit of “black humour” !! Evening all, [ZB], Foden had quite a reasonable presence in the low countries in the 50s and 60s. Their operation was centred in Belgium, a market receptive to UK, (and every one elses machinery).
When I was first in Belgium I used to regularly see an old 8LW Foden 8x4 fitted with a different coach built cab to the one you show, working from a yard in the next street to my digs. Also there were a number of half cab Foden/Gardner 6cyl mixers, working in Antwerp.
As to volume, I have no idea, but I remember being at a Construction show in Brussels in 75, where Foden had quite a reasonable stand, so they, (at that time), must have seen market potential, based on historic sales volumes. But 8LWs were rare here, (I can only recall Craddock Bros (from Coven, Staffordshire), having an 8LW Atkinson 8x4),so in Belgium/Holland, who can say?
For a nice Cradley Heath “Black Pudding”, who built the cab on that 8x4■■? Cheerio for now.
Black humour is all part of the industry, it should be part of this old timers thread, most of the stuff on here is from memories and many of those memories are only stored away because of the humour in the situation that made us remember them in the first place
However, we must remember that the type of behaviour that’s acceptable and normal in the yard is not always acceptable in the office As we’re on computers, we’re in the office, so we need to behave accordingly
Now…as you were Gentlemen

I’m going to guess: Paul & van Weelde.

I had four ex drivers in my traffic office FFS !!Plus yours truly at times, and we had,in the latter years 100 and odd drivers to manage, successfully, every day, never mind the yard, warehouse or workshop, the air was often quite regularly “Blue” fact!Fair enough, our female staff (well apart from a couple that worked in the T/office and who gave as good as they got sometimes) were always well away from what went on in the other parts of the operation but some of the things that, unfortunately, happened at times sent you “up the wall”.I would quickly get a Red Card on here if I was to relay some of the AGG and our responses to said AGG!! “Now come along Boys lets tip-toe through the Tulips singing as we go” Dear oh! dear where has all the “craic” gone ? Cheers bewick.

Hi Dennis and Mark, people ask me and may well ask Mark what he misses about living in the U.K.
I tell people still after 21 years in the States, the comaradery and craic with your workmates and others you meet on the road.
If you can not have a laugh and joke, take the p out of each other wtf. We always looked out for each other and a few beers after work, good old days when people helped, and respected each other instead of stabbing them in the back.
Regards Paul.

No idea but in the midlands Tarmac fleet i dont remember anybody having Gardner engines, mind you most of them were behind me S80 Foden with a 290 14 litre ■■■■■■■Fair enough, probably some of the other Tipper lads on the thread can give a more definative answer, but tell me,would the motor immediately behind you would have always had to be a Derv tanker ■■ Cheers Bewick.
Gardner powered trucks were certainly not allowed on tarmac surfacing work Dennis…
apart from the 40+ that we ran plus Bardon Quarries, Hoveringham, Tarmac ,Tommy Wards, hundreds of O/D’s etc etc etc
Pete.
Pete,The Tarmac fleet i was refering to was at Rowley Regis in the late 70,s. I just remebered i bought a mickey mouse cabbed Foden after the M54 job finished withe intention of breaking it but two lads from Tarmac at Nuneaton bought it for internal work.Istill have the oil stains in the yard where it was parked

If that’s right then it would have been absolutely unheard of in the industry for a telephone to ever have found itself being thrown out of an office window and the person who it accidently hit in the yard to have chucked it back instead of complaining to the management.

Spark up some controversy then H, you must have plenty of tales to tell of your times sat next to a Gardner
